I stumbled upon this interesting page: http://worldbeyondwar.org/necessary/

Some of the bullshit arguments these pacifists have come up with include:

Nonviolent resistance to Nazism in Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, and even in Berlin — poorly planned and developed though it was in that day and age — showed remarkable potential.
It didn't. It failed miserably.

War Preparation Is Also Not “Defense”

The same logic that would claim that attacking another nation is “defensive” can be used to try to justify the permanent stationing of troops in another nation. The result, in both cases, is counterproductive, producing threats rather than eliminating them. A defensive military would consist of a coast guard, a border patrol, anti-aircraft weapons, and other forces able to defend against an attack. The vast majority of military spending, especially by wealthy nations, is offensive.
LOL. Attack is the best defence. If you crush your enemies, how are they expected to fight back.

So what does everyone think? Is war necessary for anything?

Nah, most of the wars these days is fabricated by Americans to provide a reason to sustain their massive trillion dollar military industry and budget. So in a sense there is no real war but rather, controlled chaos

Pros of war: Accelerated technological progress, even if for a macabre purpose.
Examples: Internet, Satellite communications, wireless communications
Cons of war: Lack of global co-operation, No/little trust between countries, Unnecessary death and violence.
Examples: Do I even have to state any?
