Journey's over land and sea is actually a good text when u start to get into it. However i find that the two ones u have picked r probably a little more difficult to draw links with... nevertheless it can be done -and u will probably get marks for trying.
i've got a couple of little bits of information from various sources that might be helpful for you.
My own analysis - my links to S. poety - these are rather broad links i would have used another peice of related material to join everything up nicely
- impact of the physical journey
*S. poety depicts the mental impact of hte physial journey (i.e the tone and frustration of the migrants within Immigrants at central station)
*"The air was crowded/With a dampness that slowly/Sank into our thoughs"
*Journeys Over land and Sea (JOLS) - it shows how the phsycial jrouney impacted the growth of science
*"Scientitsts and artists were essential partners in these expeditions. They collaborated with writers and printers to record and depict hte expanding world..."
Thus the two peices of material demonstrate the alternate effects that can be resulted from the phsycial jrouney - there can be personal effects as shown by S. or there can be larger impacts seen in JOLS
- in both S. poety and JOLS the importance of the past is seen - this gives motivation to undertake a jouney
*Crossing the red sea - shows how the past impacted the journey of the migrants - they were escaping their wartorn homes trying to make a new life for themselves - thus this was the motivation for their journey
*"1949, and the war/ Now four years dead- / neither masters or slaves"
"Accepting outflung denouciations / with a calmness / that brought a reminder / of people listening to requiems...or a trembling voice/ that sang at the rails/ with the ship first sailed / from the sorrow / of northen waters"
*the top picture on the right hand side of JOLS - this picture was created in about 1490-1557 and is of a mythical monster - the picture is meant to reinforce the exotic past and places that the traverls were supposed to explore - the fears they had about travelling and illustrate the old stories that came about
*you can use text to back this up -
"Their tales of discover along with new and better navigational tools compelled others to pursue the unknown father from home"/I]
- the interconnection b/w the physcial and emotional impact of the journey
*In S. poety (both poems) you can clearly see that the physical joueny has an emotional impact upon the migrants - Mabye you could also draw upon 'Leaving Home' to back this up? - In Immigrants at Central Station there is a clear sence of depression surrounding the migrants
*"Like cattle brought to teh slaguher"
"The signal at the platforms end / Turned red and dropped / Like a guillotine"
*the second picture on the right hand side of JOLS - (now i'm not 100% sure abotu teh history of this figure - u may have to look it up for some extra information) The figure in teh painting is called the Elder - it depicts teh strong connection b/w the imagiative journey and the phsycial joruney - the figure is standing on plants which is meant to show bow the phsycal and emotional jouney interconnect
(i didn't use this point in my essays - you would need to get more info on who the Elder was and that might clear up this point abit - i got this information from a lecture i went to)
Lets see - i'll type up a quick summary from the top notes stimulus guide and the which have some extra little points for you -
Top notes - impacations of JOLS for physcial jrouney
*text reveals nature of humanity thorugh teh concept of the exploratory journey and makes point abotu the importance of such journeys for historical study
*jouenys of exploration are one type of physical joruney - makes point that jorunesy disvoery have always occured. Raises idea that phsycial jouney can result in both material gain and discovery
*physcial joueny undertaken in teh past resulted in discoveries abtu teh world. Journeying evoved to become a reason for jouneying itself.
*physical jouensy temselves are historical evidece. Not just for what was fournd but for the revelations they offer abotu society in teh past, beliefs, fears and responce to the mystouries.
hope that helps
