Over the holidays my class has been given 5 King Lear videos that we're supposed to watch and rotate to each student....
Problem is I can't bring myself to watch them. I started off with Brian Blessed's version, but 30 minutes into it and there was just no way I could watch it any further.

Anybody else have this problem when watching King Lear? I don't mind reading the play at all, but the videos are horridly boring.
Any tips on surviving 5 hours of craptacular viewing?

Oh God, I know how horribly boring they are. I had to watch them too, my motivation was getting into my uni course, good marks etc. Thats the reason you're watching them afterall. Watching it with a friend and making sarcastic comments about it works nicely too.

wow i thought u finished skool........neways........ur teacher is shit......whyd she just give u a load of movies......thats sooooo boring.....we watched a few in class and then went to a few prductions (like one in newtown and one in bondi)......evn they sucked but at least going out of skool was fun........u dont need five versions....u need two and u need two scenes...one from each....watch one scene from one play (ie opening scene) and one scene from the other and do tecniques and stuff.....unless ur teacher wants proof that u watched it........in that case....ur screwed......

Haha... I remember those...

Umm, play cards while you watch. Or watch it with friends. Or follow the play while watching. Or just pretend you've watched. I did a combination of all of the above. Just pick out a few points from the movies, then you should be fine.

Yeah. I was going to flog the notes off the girl who did Advanced last year, but she only had to watch 2 of the 5. I can't comprehend why we have to watch 5, it's physically impossible. We're only going to need to know of maybe 2 productions, so why try and focus on heaps. Gaah, frustration.

they want you to watch multiple versions so that you can go with the diff readings i.e feminism or family my suggestion is to watch Brook and Eyre and if you have time go see the Harlos production later this year at Bondi. there are an abbundance of notes on the net for those

I didn't know it was that extensive..

I downloaded an audio file off someone who recorded it when it was on radio (King Lear) and yeh just listening to that.

Better than reading or watching.

you are lucky u have access to five..my school didnt and we couldnt get anymore that the richard eyre one and the peter brook one. anyway just select scenes u want to go into detail with (e.g act1 sc2) and watch it in all the productions and compare the way they portray them...thats better than watching them all

i didn't have to watch 5 :S i only had to see the play in bondii, read the book, and see 2 productions, and just read about the feminist interpretation...i find peter brooks' version of 'king lear' (the black and white, dull one) is the hardest to watch, but the most useful in essays.

katie tully is a bitch
