Melbourne Uni Plans US model

If you can't be bothered reading... basically the idea is a move the a US stlye system where you do a 3/4 year generalist degree in arts/science/commerce ect and then go to "Law School."

I see it this way:

Advantages:
The first 3 years of uni would have been shitloads easier.
I could have slept more.
I could have drunk more.
I would have had more artsy-fartsy subjects and been able to impose my views on random subjects in tutorials more.
I may have made more non-law friends.

Disadvantages:
Uni would go on FOREVER.
More mature age students.
Would probably have lived with my parents for longer.
I probably would have smoked more drugs (as opposed to ~0)
I may have got sick of uni and packed up my shit and moved somewhere in the EU and never come home. (May be considered an advantage... but I wouldn't have a degree.)

Both UG and PG have their advantages... but I think straight law UG suited me best. Whatever floats you boat I guess.

UTS does and UOW will, in 2006 I think.


I've always preferred undergrad law. Postgrad...u dont even know what will happen after the 3-4 yrs... u might be pressured by family/whateva to get ur arse into a full time job...if u can get into law in the first instance then go for undergrad...if u cant, then theres always postgrad..

I think the standard would be higher if law went post graduate. Not all first years are ready for law. Three years of arts is good preparation. However, the skills required in for law are different from the skills learnt and applied in arts and commerce. They are similar, but being able to write a 3500 word essay on so and so doesn't mean you will be good at law.

That said, the current system gets the arts or commerce out of the way at the beginning with only some law subjects done at the time. The only law school that makes you do arts or commerce all the way through the degree is ANU.

Perhaps the course should be restructured. Perhaps the first year should only be arts/commerce and the introduction law subject. No substantive law subjects in first year (ie no torts in first year). Perhaps less law in the first half of the degree and more arts/commerce in the first half.

But again I felt that doing arts at the same time as my first 3 years of law was beneficial. Especially majoring in politics. I just wish I'd known then what I know now about law.

I think straight up law at uts is a little but more spread out.

UTS straight law i think u do more electives and u get non-law electives.
