I've heard from someone who goes to Sydney Uni that it has a very conservative, academic atmosphere while Maq Uni has a very liberal atmosphere and more dynamic, changing degrees...
what do u reckon?

any claim like that is a pretty dangerous one to make

I have only ever been a student at Macquarie and I honestly can't really tell how innovative and liberal the place is... I mean, you learn stuff and then you are examined on it, just like Sydney or any other university.

both uni's are really different...

the usyd atmosphere is very academically orientated. SOME people there are snobby.. but not all are. on a typical day there are thousands of people, so much more than mq.

i think the MQ atmosphere is friendlier and people arn't as obsessed with getting top marks.. at MQ it 'seems' people are happy as long as they pass.. which i guess everyone would be content with..

the usyd degree structures are very flexible, most so than at mq, but then again it depends on the degree. mq's degrees are really structure and not as flexible in that you gotta pick specific programs/patterns of study. where as at usyd, depending on your degree, you pick a major and do the required units for that major.

usyd has way more resources. the mq library sucks. the computer equipment is pretty much the same but the usyd network is much better because you only need to know 1 password and user name, not like mq where they give you so many.

the mq campus is much GREENER and its not as big as usyd. usyd is like a suburb with streets. i like the mq campus better because it means less walking and its not so hilly.

the tutors at usyd are much friendlier at usyd and much more approachable. at mq, they basically get straight to the work in the first tute/lab/prac.

i transferred to mq because of their internal transfer policy, sad to admit it i know. i didn't get my d average to be able to trasnfer within usyd plus i hated my course.

those are just generalisations but if you got any specific questions let me know...

in that case ay_caramba, i think it has to do with your course. my tutors here are very approachable. i e-mail them all the time, they always want to help students. with the flexibility point - degrees i looked at at syd were much less flexible.

what degree you doing again iambored? the efs unit tutors don't seem 'friendly'.. well thats the impression i get...

and the inflexibility of the degrees at usyd depends on the degree. for eg a b.commerce degree at mq, you chose a program ot study within the degree, the only freedom you have are the electives and when you choose to schedule your units. where as a b. commerce at usyd allows you to pick and combine all sorts of different majors so long as you do the core first year units, plus you can also schedule your units however you want...

on the flexibility issue at macq, it depends

arts/law is whatever you want, half your degree is elected

com/law (what I'm doing), has I think 2cp worth of electives for the whole degree, which isn't even one full subject

Just keep it in mind that everything jlh says is in reference to the economics division at macq. Other areas of the uni will be very different

mq lets you make your own timetable tho (if you count that as part of the 'flexibility' of a degree). I gave myself Fridays off this semester ;)

tutors..hmm..

my comp114 tutor is bloody awesome, too bad he is moving to seattle in feb cos he got a job in microsoft(i';m talking about donny if anyone knows him)

as for some other subjects tute..say stat last semester, my tutor was very approachable, and she remembers me even this semester, however, this wasn't the case for every tutor cos i remember going to a friend's lesson and his tutor..was...shocking to say the least

umm..actuarial tutor i'm having this semester is alright, approachable too..myabe cos he is a student
