The stats component of MATH1231/1241 is like an add on section to fill in time. The only question I got related to probability and statistics in my final exam used a tree diagram.

I kid you not. Year 7 probability tree diagrams in my Higher Maths 1B exam paper.
Stats is a bitch (boring, not hard), just wait for it...

i'm pretty sure it's just to prepare us for stats in 2nd year, not necessarily to fill in time

Perhaps, but when I was taught it - I got the impression that it was just to fill in time. Kinda like hyperbolic functions in MATH1141.

Mmmm stats really does sounds terribly boring altogether, hopefully I won't have to do a whole heap on it haha.

They recently overhauled the probability and stats in 1231/1241, starting the 2011/2012 summer session. Apparently they made it a little more relevant, removed some of the dumb shit and added some nicer stuff which is actually applicable, so probably stuff that helps with MATH2089 and other stats courses down the road.

Apparently the 1231 summer session final that just happened had a whole question out of 4 on stats, so it's something that's becoming more prevalent in the course by the sounds of it.

Chem engineering/Science
Will be doing second year maths courses for science major though instead of engineering mathematics so idk how much stats will be used.
Well you can pick what second year maths courses you need. Unless there are some specified courses you must take - look at the Handbook for that.
