Heya, I'm hoping to apply to become a Medical Officer in the AAF in the undergraduate scheme, by studying medicine at uni starting Feb 2011. Can anyone tell me more about the appliciation process, as i cant seem to get any further on the website than booking a "YouGov" meeting.

Does anyone know how competitive it is? Or has anyone gone through the experience of applying? Any info, good or bad, would be appreciated :)

you need to get into first year med first, then in the second year you can apply for the AAF. they then pay your uni and accommodation and you start to earn a wage while at uni, and you stay at where you are studying untill you finish your degree. thats if you want to be a doctor, for a medic im not sure

Nah it may have changed since. Couple of my friends already on the Defence Force scholarship during their 1st year of medicine.

Either way, you must apply as you normally would to any undergraduate or postgradutae medical school (very competitive for both types of entry), then apply to be a medical officer in the defence force (extremely easy - ADF is in dire need of med graduates).

Good deal if you're in real need of money during the degree, otherwise its shithouse, you've gotta return the number of years you're on the scholarship + 1

Starting salary is good as a med student - $56K and rises about 5-6 every year you pass.

i.e. UNSW 6 years degree
So return 6+1 = 7 years.

By the time you've finished doing all the army training/posting/etc all your friends will be consultants and you'd prolly still be a resident maybe reg.
