Medical Science. A good idea? (1 Viewer)

Hi guys!

I'm new here and I've been skimming through the forum posts on BoS for awhile now, so I have decided to post something and ask for assistance. I'm currently in my Preliminary year of the HSC but it's better to think towards the future I guess...

I've had problems choosing what I want to do as an undergraduate degree in university. My plan is to do Dentistry at the University of Sydney. I've been thinking of doing Medical Science, but I've heard that it would not lead to early job opportunities and experiences, and that Medical Science graduates struggle to find jobs and some of them don't find a job for months.. I'm stuck!

If I were to do, for example, a Bachelor of Nursing degree, would that be enough for me to get into the Dentistry course? What courses do you guys recommend. I've had one recommendation to do Medicine for 3 years and drop out, as you immediately get a BMedSc and would lead to more job opportunities but I'm quite unsure!

Any suggestions, thoughts, opinions would be highly appreciated! Stop me from thinking too much!

This is not true what so ever.

As for dentistry admission. Usyd does not care about what undergrad degree you've done, neither does any other university. All they care about is your MARKS from that degree and your GAMSAT score as well as our interview score. So if you think you can ace gamsat after doing a nursing degree, then go for it. The reason people usually do medsci etc is because it prepares you quite well for the gamsat so you have an advantage over people who aren't doing science degrees.

Anyway, Why don't you also try for undergraduate dentistry (CSU, JCU,GU,UQ), If your goal is dentistry and you can afford to move away from home for around 5-6 years then you should certainly try for undergrad dent as it's easier to get into in comparison to grad dent.

I agree with amirbang. Also if you think it's easy to get a job in dentistry you are sorely mistaken too. Some graduates from dentistry take 6 months to find a job and sometimes it is just a part time job. It's going to get worse in the future especially by the time you graduate.

I ask you what if you continually fail the GAMSAT and interview to get into USYD Dent what then?

Wow. I never knew that! Thanks for clearing that up. Do you know what sort of marks I would need in order to do postgraduate dentistry(perhaps a D, or HD)? As for undergraduate dentistry, I'm just wondering if other universities would be as prestigious as USyd...

Well, I am still in high school after all. I do understand that over time, especially in the future it will be continually harder to find a job, even with a degree. I'm not completely sure what I would do if I were to fail the GAMSAT and interview, however, I do feel that for example a nursing degree (rather than a medical science degree) as a safety net would give me less things to worry about!

There arent many jobs in the Medical Science field, but with a MedSci degree, you can branch out into other things.

C minimum as a barrier and GAMSAT as a barrier for interview offer. Your final ranking is based on your interview performance.

Coming from USYD myself and being offered medicine and dentistry. Despite USYD's prestige their teaching sucks. Prestige should not be the reason you're picking courses. Some people do think USYD is more prestigious but if you're going to hate your job everyday you wake up prestige doesn't mean anything. There is only 40 or so local student places I think but do look it up.

I saw a recent statistic, 10% of nurse graduates are unemployed.
