What can you do with a Bachelor of Medical Science degree at USYD in terms of job prospects? I've always been under the impression that it's pretty much a dead-man's degree if you don't use it to obtain a spot in MBBS? Am I correct?
dunno what exactly it stands for, but i think its something like medicine * * surgery.Originally posted by +GriM ReApeR+
whats a MBBS....?
Yeah, my HSC Chem tutor used to be a Med Sci professor, and he said most people used it as a jumping off point to transfer into Med at UNSW or Newcastle. The problem is that the % of people accepted into Medicine through first year transfer is TINY, so a lot of people get 'stuck' in Medical Science, which is a little bad cos it doesn't give you a qualification for any sort of medical degreeOriginally posted by JKDDragon

Damn i feel sorry for those persistent people out there. If i don't make med, i'll probably do something else to do something sciency but not medical science.Originally posted by babydoll_

I do Med science at UNSW (first year) and there are no majors for med science. This is a major reason why people dont get employed with this degree.. the course is so general.Originally posted by kimmeh
Med sci has gone down too at USYD.. a bit of a worry... i wouldnt mind doing it and end up doing pathology or research/lab work in the end. Hmm... depends what you major in too what's the difference between the Bsc majors and the BMedSci majors?
is this for UNSW only or for all uni's having Med. Sci? thats does sound a bit bad though not having majors...Originally posted by saves.the.day

As for transfers in first year, I met a person doing 3rd year med science and he told me that in his first year, all 140+ of them applied for a transfer into med and 4 of them made the transfer in year 1.
Every single person I have met in my course is doing it to try to transfer into medicine so the competition is really really tough.

Yes there are majors. you "pick your majors in the second/third year. But in your certification of graduation, they don't print what major you did, unlike the science people.Originally posted by saves.the.day

I don't think all of them actually apply for medicine. Some apply for Pharmacy at USdy. So...and plus you have a lot of people just want to do B Medsci, which is similar to a science degree. So the chance of you getting a job is the same as B Science people....It's just that BMedSci is a NAMED degree with 2 specialised subjects.Originally posted by saves.the.day
