hi i want to do medicine. Is there anyone doing it or knows sum1 studying it that can tell me what is involved and how hard it is etc.
I am also not sure where to study. If i don't get into med. i was thinking of doing commerce/law. any other suggestions??

Umm... you kind of need to have prepared to do medicine already if you are in yr 12. I know the people in my year had to have entered for the UMAT a while ago, and also had to send in their forms for rural medicine thing.

ACER (UMAT) registrations closed June 13.
UNSW Registrations of Interest closed July 25.
Application forms and cirriculumn vitae's to be received by July 25.

UMAT tickets were distributed 2 weeks ago (almost).

UMAT on July 30.

Is medicine only an option if you get in straight after year 12? Don't give up that easily- lots of people don't start medicine until their twenties or even thirties.

Unless you *really* want to do commerce/law... I've never understood why so many people who want to do medicine turn around and do law when they don't get in first go! To each their own, I guess...

Because these type of ppl are only in it for the $$, meaning they'll do any prestigious degree to get a good job, not because its what they really wanna do

Wow what a cynical bunch.

Is it not even remotely possible that people are genuinely interested in both? I know I am although I will choose med over law if I get into med.

I did work experience with a surgeon, it was fascinating. No one would ever be bored doing med I reckon. If I did a combined law degree I could do shit to do with ski resort litigation (which is a rapidly growing area) and that ties in with one of my biggest passions, skiing. Plus, having a law degree doesn't mean you become a lawyer. They are extremely useful degrees to have for anything to do with business which, if you don't do something like med, you are likely to be involved in.

when u see ppl who are in that situation of transferring from med to law it really makes your boold boil...especially when they come up with some lame excuse about not being in it for the money...haha sif! not meaning to be really ugly with my judgements and whatnot...but with some ppl it really makes you wonder...
but in relation to minais comment...med contrary to pupular belief does not earn you stacks of $$, because think about it, basically 40 pc is gone thru tax, u give a large proportion to insurance companies (a real prob given med litigation cases these days) and the rest? its not much....(that is, if you do the basic GP thingy stead of specialising)...

evidently ppl arent doing the gp thang or there wouldnt be a "chronic" shortage, which means the lucky year 12 2004 , med might be easier to get into

Heh, they're going to start having rurally bonded places in medicine (by accepting a place you agree to practice for six consecutive years in a rural area). They have Rural Bonded Scholarships at the moment ($20000 pa for every year at medical school) but these new places are without scholarships- and given to the applicants who are at the bottom of the list (so if you only 'scrape' into a medical course, you will only be able to accept a medically bonded place- or nothing). I don't think it's very fair.

i do both science/math subjects and humanities subjects. i have no idea what i want to do and was just looking 4 suggestions!! i am not in it 4 money as everyone seems 2 think i want to work for an aid soceity if i get into medicine and become a qualified doctor. commerce/law would be a backup coz i like biz/"small print stuf". i thought id clear that all up since every1 seems 2 hav an opinion on it

Not Australia necessarily. The industry is relatively small. Anyway a lack of cases doesn't mean it's not an issue. It is definitely an issue. Everyone is trying to cover their arses down there at the moment. Things like terrain parks, if a kid smacks himself up on a rail or something. The potential for problems is definitely there.

But yeah, as I said, you do medicine because you want to. If you don't get in and decide against backdoor-ing it, going for a law degree doesn't mean you become a lawyer. They are extremely useful degrees to have for anything to do with business which, if you don't do something like med, you are likely to be involved in.

There shouldn't be a 'gold-digging' like quality attached to persuing a law degree just for having one. It is only a degree. Medicine on the other hand is a career. That is not a degree you do just for the hell of it.
