I missed on campus accommodation on thursday and am now absolutely screwed!!

I know i should have already had other places lined up but things happen that don't allow other things to happen.

Demand for off campus accomodation close to the uni is off the charts!!

Does anyone have any ideas/can i move in with you lol??

Where abouts do you live now? Are you moving to Newcastle from somewhere else?

When I started, I was living on the Central Coast, which meant a 4 hours on the train each day. It was really hectic, but I managed to get through a semester. There is heaps of accomodation available around Jesmond, Birmingham Gardens, New Lambton etc you just need to look through accomodation databases that the uni has set up.

It all depends on what kind of place you're looking for, but there are places available. Expect to pay around $90 - $100 for a decent furnished place though. You can get cheaper $70/week places that are furnished, but they can be quite old.

I live at the bottom of the Blue Mountains, so its a 3 1/2 hour drive each way, so travelling everyday isn't an option.

I spent today going through the databases and setting up inspections etc. and generally the prices sit around $100, which is pretty ok.

Which suburb do you think would be best to move into??

Actually getting accommodation on campus is hard. If you apply for it, you should assume you're not going to get it. The supply and demand for on campus accommodation is outrageous.

There's a massive shortage of rental properties in newcastle at the moment, and there's all sorts of dodgy dealings, like rent auctioning, to get places and if you have no references you've basically got no chance.

I recommend you get on the trail NOW, on top of that find some 4-leaf clovers, sacrifice goats and pray to allah, jesus and buddah because you will need every advantage you can get!

If you Search for Dalton Real Estate they specialise in student accommodation, I helped a friend from interstate find a place. The people there are excellent and find great units and stuff close to the shops & transport etc + of course the university.

from a social aspect does being off campus have a huge disadvantage?
i mean not being involved in certain sport stuff where each campus block vs' another campus team.
or are the off campus people also involved in that stuff too?

A lot of people advertise spare rooms and stuff around campus too, even now during the holidays there are a few up (though not as many). If you're really stuck it might be worth looking around the notice boards.

The notice boards are cleaned off every friday arvo/monday morning though, so mid-late week is when they'll have the most stuff to check out.

I missed on campus accommodation but found a place pretty quick. Parents didnt want me in a sharehouse so im doing a home stay thing, the only thing is the house rules are pretty strict, but at least ill get some good study done. I was worried about social disadvantage, but aparently 3 000 people are in the same situation without accommodation, so ill get over it :p.

The rest of us got rejected last week lol, so if you haven't heard anything about your application i'd suggest getting onto the accommodation website and checking the status of your application.

I've organised a month's stay at a friends place in newcastle, until I can find another place. Gargh! dammit, I thought getting into uni was the difficult part.
