I had an old nokia 2100. i thought it was okay. sounds like your friend had dropped it in water or something with the way it lags!

My Nokia N-Gage:

Pros:

+Sybian 60 Platform: Thousands of applications/games/utilities availible for free.
+Huge 176x208 pixel 4096 colour Active Matrix (no motion ghosting) screen.
+Ability to play N-gage platform games (visual quality comaparible to Sega Saturn)
+Ability top play S60 platform games, including Gameboy Colour, Mame, NES and Genesis Emulators.
+Ability to play Java games.
+Acts as a 128MB removeble drive
+Radio and MP3 playback
+Polyphonic (Midi) and MP3 ringtones
+Sidetalkin'
+Bluetooth capability
+Big enough not to loose (I lost my Panasonic G60 without even realising)
+GPRS- Operah Browser availible
+PIM Functions- Calender, Schedual, Todo lists etc.
+Ability to view a decent quality feature length movie on the run (great for train trips).
+The N-gage has a 32bit 104 Mhz processor.
+Unique "taco-phone" shape.
+Tri-Band
+The N-gage has safe-guards against blue-jacking.
+People like to bag the N-Gage when they pay more for a crappier phone.
+Only $200 when I bought it 6 months ago. It was cheaper than the 3200, which is only a System 40 phone.

Cons:

-People like my phone more than they like me
-My phone makes me feel inadequet
-If I spend all my time playing Sonic while listening to MP3s the batteries die within a day.
-No stores stock the replacement covers, so I have to order them online.

Most people bag the N-gage. Hardcore gamers don't like it because of its flaws as a gaming platform (orientation of the screen and lack of shoulder buttons) but most are impressed once you tell them you can play Phantasy Star or Super Mario with decent framerates on the run. Most non-geeks bag it because of the funny way you talk into it (see www.sidetalkin.com), but I don't mind sidetalkin'; i admit it is pretty stupid but I think its funny. You could always use the included hands-free or even use it normally (a simple mod makes that even easier).

Conclusion: I love my phone. Its the best 200 bucks i've spent in ages.

While I'm at it I'll review my Panasonic G60.

Pros

+Nice 128x128 pixel colour screen
+More bang for your buck feature wise compared to the more popular Sony Ericcson and Nokia models at the same time.
+Nice Polyphonic synthesis.
+Truetones capable.
+Voice recording
+Stylelish
+Nice interface

Cons

-I dropped it and this bunch of kids stole it.
-They must have sold it to this girl I know, because i see her using it iand it has the same scratch marks as mine.
-Pressing cancel while composing an sms deletes the message.
-Only one game: Blackjack.
-Mega message lag.
-GPRS on this phone isn't supported by optus, even though they sold it to me.

Conclusion: This phone had a number of flaws, but i end up becoming quite attached to it. For its time it was excellent value (it was basically the same price of the Nokia 2100). Nice style but a little underpowered.

Nokia 8250

Pros:
- Sturdy. Dropped it so many times and it still works. Even flew out of my pocket when I jumped from a ledge once, across the ashphalt, and still survived.
- Has a cool blue screen
- Survived this long

Cons:
- I have Maths in 5 minutes and have too many things to read and reply before then!
- Battery life is variable.. can go for 3 days / a week depending
- Long message writing can be laggy

All the older "square" nokias, are pretty good because they're reliable and sturdy - they don't fall apart very often heh.

i kinda thought it looked okayish, until the updated n-gage came out, then i was like "nup!!!!"

and it sounds like you are VERY biased, you failed to point out one single "con" of the phone, only stuff like "My phone makes me feel inadequet".

+Sybian 60 Platform: Thousands of applications/games/utilities availible for free.
true, but a lot of the decent stuff you have to pay for. plus some apps are not designed for the n-gage as it has no camera.

+Huge 176x208 pixel 4096 colour Active Matrix (no motion ghosting) screen.
i wouldn't call it huge - in terms of size or resolution. most phones nowdats are 65536+ colour. take a look at the sharp gx30 screen, now THAT'S huge!!

+Ability top play S60 platform games, including Gameboy Colour, Mame, NES and Genesis Emulators.
yes but the average person would have no idea how to go about this

+Acts as a 128MB removeble drive
no it doen't, unless you buy a 128MB memory card.

+Sidetalkin'
you claim you like it, but that won't change the fact that you'll get strange looks in the street

+Big enough not to loose (I lost my Panasonic G60 without even realising)
correct, it is very big.

+PIM Functions- Calender, Schedual, Todo lists etc.
even my 2100 has this....

+Ability to view a decent quality feature length movie on the run (great for train trips).
lol that's funny shit - first off you'll need a bigger memory card, and secondly who's gonna stare at a tiny screen for 90+ minutes???

+Unique "taco-phone" shape.
how is that an advantage?

+The N-gage has safe-guards against blue-jacking.
like nearly all bluetooth phones.

+People like to bag the N-Gage when they pay more for a crappier phone.
that's just your opinion

+Only $200 when I bought it 6 months ago. It was cheaper than the 3200, which is only a System 40 phone.
yes but the 3200 has stuff that the n-gage doesn't have.

No, bias would involve me making up my mind without even trying the device properly. I shopped around alot before deciding to buy this phone. I didn't put down many cons because it suits my needs. I value features and games over style and being conventional. I like larger but flatter phones, hence it appeals to me; most people like smaller ones so all the power to them. Sidetalkin might be downright stupid, but it acts as a talking point. I've started many a conversation with strangers by first talking on my phone. They look at me and ask "Why are you holding a gameboy to your head?". I make a joke about how stupid my taco-phone is and they usually find me interesting enough to hold a conversation with. Meeting fellow N-gage owners is also fun, as we usually can play multiplayer Tony Hawk or trade movies/songs/apps etc.

There are virtually no cons in the interface and functionality side (which i find important) as the S60 platform is very polished and well developed. One big con for me is that with many generic memory cards you have to buy a card reader because the computer may have trouble accessing the data via the phones USB interface.

OMG TEH STEPH IDIT!?!?!!1
Okay reply time.

+Sybian 60 Platform: Thousands of applications/games/utilities availible for free.
true, but a lot of the decent stuff you have to pay for. plus some apps are not designed for the n-gage as it has no camera.

Erm, all the apps I use are freeware, except for smartmovie.

+Huge 176x208 pixel 4096 colour Active Matrix (no motion ghosting) screen.

Okay. Considering most $200-300 still have 128x128 passive matrix screens and the GX30 costs AU$799-899 and has a 240x320 passive matrix screen; I'd say this screen is rather decent.

+Ability top play S60 platform games, including Gameboy Colour, Mame, NES and Genesis Emulators.
yes but the average person would have no idea how to go about this

I wasn't reviewing for the average user. I was reviewing for the demographic who would visit an IT forum. Anyway, installing an emulator on the phone is just as easy as intalling something on a computer.

+Acts as a 128MB removeble drive
no it doen't, unless you buy a 128MB memory card.

Yes. 50 dollars for the 128 mmc card. Thats just as cheap as a stand alone removeble USB drive.

+Sidetalkin'
you claim you like it, but that won't change the fact that you'll get strange looks in the street

I have the feeling you do not detect sarcasm very well.

+Big enough not to loose (I lost my Panasonic G60 without even realising)
correct, it is very big.

Okay, now I know you cannot detect sarcasm.

+PIM Functions- Calender, Schedual, Todo lists etc.
even my 2100 has this....

Okay. Congrats.

+Ability to view a decent quality feature length movie on the run (great for train trips).
lol that's funny shit - first off you'll need a bigger memory card, and secondly who's gonna stare at a tiny screen for 90+ minutes???

I've seen my brother play my gameboy advance all day without looking away from the screen. The small screen is okay to view, say if you're on a bus or train. I used to bring Full Metal Alchemist to watch during english class. I couldn't exactly sneak in a 15" CRT, could I.

+Unique "taco-phone" shape.
how is that an advantage?

Sarcasm.

+The N-gage has safe-guards against blue-jacking.
like nearly all bluetooth phones.

Yes, nearly all recent ones.

+People like to bag the N-Gage when they pay more for a crappier phone.
that's just your opinion

Yes, a review is an opinion.

+Only $200 when I bought it 6 months ago. It was cheaper than the 3200, which is only a System 40 phone.
yes but the 3200 has stuff that the n-gage doesn't have.

A VGA camera and thats about it. Though cool kids do all have 3200s, so I must be missing out on something.

Pros: It was CHEAP! I got it from a shop for $50
You can send SMS! Wow!
It looks good compared to other cheap phones
If I lost it I wouldn't even care

Cons: No accessories I'm afraid, so no phone covers with porno on them, or flashing neon lights
Games are crap but what phone games aren't?
Battery life is like 10 min if you use the backlight, otherwise goes for days
