If youre running > Win98 then Microsoft Movie Maker is a good option, you can get it from their website

Yep. I'd have to recommend movie make to anyone starting out in video. It's the easiest to work with. When you want to get a little more involved it's best to get proper software to do it.

Yeah.

But Movie Maker doesnt seem to have a great deal many features. I was hoping for something where i can edit graphics, change colours etc.

In that case you might need something more powerful, which might not be freeware. You might want to check out download.com and some of the software available.
