i just wanted to say something about being told to drop from 3u to standard. it hasn’t even been week 5 yet and we’ve only done like 2 in-class quizzes. based off that i’m already being told to move down. the marks i’ve been losing aren’t because i don’t understand the content. it’s been silly mistakes like forgetting the letter in my final answer, not simplifying fully, or just rushing and missing something small. it’s dumb mistakes, not that i can’t do the maths. i know that’s still on me, but that’s something i can fix. it’s not like i’m completely lost with the work. i just feel like it’s really early to make that decision off 2 quizzes where i’ve made careless errors. i’m willing to put more effort in, slow down, check everything properly and actually fix those habits. but i also dont know if i should listen and drop

Honestly, its up to you if you want to drop if it feels hard. I actually have some advice as a fellow year 11 student! Basically, to improve in maths, yes, you are supposed to do it more regularly so I advise that you start implementing some plans into how much you will study for maths, like doing the Cambridge maths textbook, to just be able to practise the questions you do in class.

Another tip which I feel like should help you, its something I'm currently trialing/working on, but I'm not sure if it works long term but:
Every time I sit down to do maths homework and/or extra questions, I have a sheet of paper with me with 4 columns:
1. Question I got wrong
2. What did I do wrong
3. What is the Correct Approach
4. What will I do differently next time

No MATTER WHAT you get wrong, you should always put it in there and NONE OF "I would've gotten this but like it was a silly and simple mistake" even a simple mistake like wrong number or misreading your own working out(Lol thats me). EVERY MISTAKE COUNTS.

BTW, I STRONGLY SUGGEST using physical paper and pen to write it down instead of typing. It will help you.

This should help you with recognising the common mistakes you make in a lot of the questions you do, should possibly help you fix them since you will know what to do. Also, I advise using ChatGPT to show you the working out and process, and you can even ask your teacher if your working out is up to their standards.

AND EXTRA TIP:

This is going to probably sound stupid but if it weren't for this advice, I wouldn't have been doing Ext right now, but in your exam if you're making silly mistakes, BE CAREFUL, like double check your answer and if it seems sus or it doesn't quite click in your mind, cross check with another method of working out.
(Thats why we have multiple methods of working out for the same solution)

But try not to be too paranoid or anything it could eat up time in your exams

Anyways, the choice is yours if you want to drop EXT Maths but if whether you are or not pursuing EXT Maths I still heavily recommend this just to try to see if it works for you.

GOOD LUCK! YOU CAN IMPROVE. DON'T WORRY 🙂
EDIT: I agree with Study to Success, if it is mainly just silly mistakes dropping to Standard wouldn't really benefit you, use what I said: it could work for you!

the 4 column thing lowkey sounds like a good idea 😭 i think my biggest problem is i brush off mistakes as “that was just silly” instead of actually fixing the pattern behind it. like yeah it’s small stuff but it keeps happening so clearly i need to be more intentional about it.
appreciate you taking the time to write all that fr 🙏

Don't drop. My regret was choosing Mathematics Standard 2 for the HSC. I don't understand why teachers think like this, its not like your wasting their time or anything. You're clearly on track to getting excellent marks once you fix these 'simple' mistakes. Also, from experience, I got 64 % when I could've gotten 76%/80% if it wasn't for these 'simple' errors in a Mathematics Extension 1. The above comment provides excellent advice.

yeah that’s what i’m worried abt tbh 😭 i don’t wanna drop now and regret it later just bc of a bad start.

Yeah! Also make sure to make em double sided so you don't get overwhelmed with too many papers:
TIP: I just make one of these then whenever i need more I just scan and photocopy more off the original one.
Honestly, if I were you I would still go with EXT maths, you still can do good don't give up it's just the mistakes getting to you!
Just have it next to you EVERY TIME you do any maths problems, questions and homework.
TBH I just stopped using it for a few days, but now I'm getting back into it: I keep having to write so much of it down D:
JUST REMEMBER TO READ THEM OR REVIEW THESE IN A WEEK OR SO: DON'T JUST WRITE EM AND LEAVE EM !(You will have learned nothing by that + I'm a hypocrite since sometimes I jst don't read em again D: )
Just make sure not to waste time with it by decorating or writing more than you need to. It's just there to be short, sharp and provide working out mistakes. Good luck!

Don't drop it! As a 2u student, I don't have any advice for you, except that five weeks is really not enough time to tell whether a course is right for you!! And it sounds like extension is where you want to be. So definitely keep it 💜
