A lot of the time, you can buy a suit from a smaller company for the same price of renting one from a larger one
I went to one in the city, I can't remember the name. But a lot of asian stores will sell you a suit (tie, shirt, jacket/blazer thing, pants + belt) for $150-200

Try ebay, sounds dodgy I know, but if your 'online shopper smart' you can find some cheaper suits from Korea or China, I got my suit like this. Also try Asos.com http://www.asos.com/au/Men/Suits-Blazers/Cat/pgecategory.aspx?cid=5678

Go to vinnies and find a cheap suit that you like the look of and fits you reasonably well. Take it to a tailor (there's plenty of cheap, but good quality asian tailors around) and get them to give it a nice fit. Odds are you'll look better than most people at your formal while spending much less - looking good in a suit is primarily about the fit.
