1. Style - The way a writer uses language. Examine tone, imagery, diction, and other techniques, and devices used in the text.
2. Characterisation - The methods used to create characters in a text. There are 5 methods commonly used:
i)direct descrition
ii)by their actions or speech
iii)through their thoughts or feelings
iv)by what other characters say about them
iiv)by symbolic association with particular objects or ideas
(hope my roman numerals are correct)-note NOT TECHNIQUE!
3. Language Features - not sure on this one, I can give you only a definition on language; Words and the rules and methods of combining them.
When asked to examine or analyse the language used in a text you are being asked to comment on:
*style and choice of language used
*its effect on the reader's interpretation
*the disclouse(a way of speaking) that the text has used
To analyse the style of the language you need to consider 3 basic dimensions:
*Diction-choice of words
*Syntax-order of words
*Rhetorical devices-figurative language, rhetorical questions, invocations(an appeal for help or inspiration), exclamations.
4. Text as Narrative - yet again I dont really have a definition one, but you might want to consider How certain elements build up a description of a character or setting, explain how one event occured because of others, or using flashbacks or suspense.
5. Plot - The design or structre of events in a story to produce curiosity and suspense in readers.
Three plot questions readers should ask are;
*why did that happen?
*why is it happening?
*what will happen next and why?
6. Setting - The place and context in which the events of a story occur. Phyisical, social, historical settings, moral and psychological dimensions.
