Hi,
I was wondering if you guys could help me in subject selections for 2007 Year 11.

Problem:
Apparently my choice of doing 2 Unit Maths in Year 12 in a selective school powerhouse for Maths (2/3 of Year 12 offered to do 4 unit Maths-no prizes for guessing which school), and opting for 4 unit English in Year 12, has resulted in me being told that even if you do average for your grade in the 4 Unit Math Course competing against your school year, you would still be scaled well in comparison.

On the downside, I've also been told that if you do well in a 4 unit course for English at a school which is traditionally weak in English, you would not be scaled as high as doing average in 4 unit maths at the same school.

So I've been tearing my hair out whether to remain in choosing 4 Eng, 2 Maths or 3 Maths, 3 English.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd suggest you choose the subjects that you feel most confident in and enjoy the most. From what I have heard, scaling will NOT affect you if you do well in a subject, nor will it scale u up to like, say, a band 6, if u do poorly in it. It seems unrealistic that your mark will get scaled up even if you do poorly in a subject purely cuz ur school as a whole does well in it.

****I'm still learning how this whole HSC scaling thing works, so I can't say my info is 100% reliable or accurate.

Main point - Don't choose subjects because of scaling. Subjects scale differently every year.

If you feel confident in Maths, do it. If you feel confident in English, do that.

Make sure you do subjects which will compliment your skills and that you have a general interest in.

very true what everyone has said already. do subjects you enjoy.

in my year about 3/4 of 3unit students went on with 4unit maths. I remained in the other 1/4 because if i followed the crowd just to select a subject that scaled and that my school did well in, i still wouldv'e done badly in it because i wouldnt have been motivated to do any work for it.
