Yep, fast, easy, you don't have to spend "that much" in comparison to other methods/alternative ways.

Great for file sharing between 2 computers, if you have more then it becomes 'a little more' complicated and expensive :)

Yes for games and Internet sharing.

I've never had to print through a network before, but I would imagine it works.

PC1 --> PC2

PRINTER

Printing from PC2, through PC1, which is connected to the Printer itself. :)

You need a cross-over cable.

This is just a standard network cable.

Cross over cable
2 metres $5
5M $10
10M $20
15M $25

M denotes the length in metres (just in case you were confused :))

Network cable
2 metres $5
5M $10
10M $15
15M $20
20M $25

Prices taken from www.umart.com.au :)

You want to purchase cross over cables, what you have are network cables.

Grab them from your local tandy or dicksmith or computer store, they dont cost much depending on the length you buy. Yes printing is as easy as 1-2-3, just attach the printer on either computer, share it, and it should be usable by either nodes. You can certainly play games, sharing internet is much a breeze, all you need to do is right click on your Internet connection in your Network Connections ( Right Click on My network places on desktop and go to properties) , then go to properties, there should be a tab called "Internet connection sharing" ICS, just tick the check box and you should be all set :)

i don't get it, what is the difference between the two cables??? i mean physically...i imagine they must look very similiar since the crossover cable has to fit at the back of both computers like the network cable did...

appearance side, no difference at all, but it's the wiring inside it that makes a difference, this is the only form of network cable which allows two nodes (PC's) to be networked without the aid of a server or a network hub/switch. As you are obviously setting up a P2P network, that's the cable that actually allows you to do so.

Yes you can, they won't affect your PC in anyway, you just get this little icon in the system tray (near the clock), that shows a computer with an X on it, meaning the network is not connected

it's all good now, but once you get your cross over cable, plug it in, and see if it works, if not, then run the wizard again

it's very very self explanatory, if you got any questions you can IM me on MSN Messenger on:

winnyston_z@hotmail.com

or you can ask Huy, the one who designs computers :p

You're not supposed to use network cables, but if you've created a new network, you can always delete or re-configure the connection at a later date.

If (for some reason) you have created a new network connection (it is usually called "Local Area Connection"), then you can re-configure TCP/IP in the network properties.

But I shouldn't worry, just purchase cross-over cables and plug them in, run the wizard again (as Winston has stated), and all should be well. :)

Don't worry too much if you've used the wrong cable (well, you shouldn't have "tried/tested" it at all, but that's not the issue here).

So get your (new) cables, run the network setup wizard, and bob's your uncle :)

FFS lol i hate that quote...

anyways as Mr.Whiz Kid has stated, which sounds a tad confusing, if your not as computer savvy as you are :p... basically the Wizard just helps new users set the configuration of a network without the need of you to touch the settings, for example to setup a basic P2P network manually, you'll need to have the workgroup name identical, the subnet address the same, and the first 3 places of the IP to be the same and the last to be different for example

Computer 1:

IP: 192.168.0.1
SUBNET: 255.255.255.0

Computer 2:

IP: 192.168.0.2
SUBNET: 255.255.255.0

instead of you having to add that into the network connections dialog, the wizard automatically helps you plug this data in

just a little explanation as to what the wizard does for you, so don't fret, the wizard does no harm to your computers normal functions.

And i hope we have answered all your questions, if you have any other questions please feel free to ask

$50 to do it?
I need a job in the IT industry! :p Haha, that's just a rip off freaking_out. I wouldn't ask for more than $15 for the required/necessary cabling (with a few metres to spare, in case you need to expand in the future) and $1 for a bottle of water for me :)

Winston, but Bob IS my uncle! :D :D ;)

"No need for cabling"

What are you, setting up a wireless network there? Do you have a 802.11g base station? (54Mbps)

Now who's the ripoff! :D

You'll be needing at least 2m of cabling, if not 5 for later expansion/future growth. (You might want to host a LAN in the future, who knows, I have about 20m of cabling to spare on each node/computer) :)
