Hi I am kind of new with networking. I have one laptop and one computer, both has ethernet NICs and TCP/IP capable and one crossover cable. The problem is that when I set both of my computer IPs manually to 223.223.223.1 and 223.223.223.2, they seems to detect a connection, but this doesn't appear in My Network Places. I tried using the 'add network places' function and 'view workgroups' function, none of them detected the other computer. Both computer names are set to the same workgroup. I shut down both firewalls as well. THose setup wizards also didn't really help as well.

I tried pinging each of the computers, both seems to be able to send and recieve all its packets. So what the hell is going on? Both computers are running XP (one has SP2 though) and both pretty up to date in terms of hardware (1.6ghz and 2.4ghz).

If both computers are on XP the network should pretty much connect itself. If it doesn't then I would guess it was a hardware problem.

Working now :D

Apparantly another firewall was running in the background. Funny, it never showed up in the task manager in both application and processes. I didn't notice it until I checked windows security centre, I assumed that there weren't any firewalls once I shut down the internal one on XP, I don't remember installing the other firewall... ah well. Thanks your time and help guys,
