Does anyone here read Icon in the Saturday SMH? If so you should be familiar with that section on the first inside page, to the lower right is a little section for dead techs (like analogue phones, commodore 64s etc). Hold this thought.

Today I was getting dinner from a chinese restaurant (Winston! :p) and picked up this really old movie magazine from June 1997. I flipped it open and there I saw an ad for a pager, you may remember it, called the "Trakka". Remember that 1997 was about two years before people started getting phones en mass (1999) and so cells were quite expensive and unreliable (only Telstra and a bit of Optus). Do you think Icon should hear about the "Trakka"? I'm wondering when it died though. It was so stupid, you had to use a pay phone to find out what people wanted. The lifespan shown would probably be 1997 - 1998.

Anyway, do you guys have any other obsolute bits of hardware that you've stumbled across lately? Just curious. :)

Didn't start? You're kidding! I though there must have been a few people running around with that little piece of plastic shit...

Well, obviously not right not, but you know.

Pfft this isn't spam. I'm trying to start discussion that DOESN'T involve pc vs mac or intel vs athlon. Seems like I'm pulling it off and YOU aren't Winston! :D

Speaking of which, is Athlon cheaper? Should I get it for my new computer? And when is WinXP-64 being released, early or late next year?

AMD's are cheaper

WinXP 64 Bit has been released like 1 yr ago

Why would you want it when you need a 64 bit processor to run it?

Are you sure it came out a year ago? I was reading icon and they said it comes out NEXT year. Send me a link Winston!

And I'm building a new computer, so I might as well get a 64bit processor anyway eh. It'll have to last after all. Anyway, if AMDs are cheaper, are they STILL cheaper when I include the 3 turbofans to go with it? :D

Haha tamagotchi! The only thing left from THAT fad are those awful digimon things, but now they're the size of a truck.

WinXP 64 is designed to utilise a 64bit processor most efficiently. WinXP 32...isn't. :D

Better multi-tasking, it's good for servers, right now it's mainly used for servers anyway, but it's very soon going to migrate on to desktop PC's, think of your standard 32 bit as a traffic highway, if it's doubled the highway will be wider, and longer, and able to fit more traffic, much like data can be processed faster.

Bah, you quote from all the techie magazines, but get it wrong!

Think of the M4. Now pretend its 4 lanes are a 32-bits. Double the 4 lanes (8 lanes) and it's now 64-bits. This means faster traffic (data) flow, more cars (information) can travel (be processed) at once, to more destinations (applications).

Doesn't change the length of the M4 though. You could apply the same analogy to processor speed (speed limit) but 32/64 doesn't really affect this.

That's basically the same as what i said you idiot, but i think you actually quoted from a mag, while i wrote it off the top of my head, 64 bit is just double the power of 32 bit if you wanted to think of it simply like that, it's not a very prevalent type of CPU in home usage, so i wouldn't worry too much about it, but it's soon going to be a big bang with more improvements.

I'd also like to add is it's intended use is to extend current x86 CPU architecture to another level because currently the standard 32 bit processors can only handle up to 4 gigs of memory so the 64 bit is in it's attempt to surpass this limit, it's a much of an advancement, but there isn't alot of applications designed specifically to take use of 64 bit's ability, i know microsoft is gradually under taking changes and making 64 bit version applications as well, but for now 64 bit is backwards compatible, but it's not worth the money for now.
