hey just wondering if anyone could give me a better idea of the types/ages of people who live in each college house area. Looked on the website but it didnt really say much apart from that Barahineban is where all the quiet older people stay. Probably looking to go mostly self catered so leaning towards evatt, just wondering whether the self catered places at edwards are also open for 1st years. Thanks!:)

ps. Also any idea of the percentage of people who get in out of all who apply... Or which is most popular/difficult to get into

sorry about all the questions at once, the website is kind of useless...

If you're 1st year and moving on campus because you have had to move for uni, then you should be fine getting a place at one of the colleges.

Barahineban:
A nice place to stay if you like either rooming with someone or living by yourself away from the 'hussle and bussle' of the other colleges. Id say its mostly couples, international students and 3rd/4th year students living here. Nice rooms and id say a higher quality overall compared to the others (its a newer complex). I was thinking about moving there this year, although it is pretty pricey if you have a room to yourself. Will need to cook/provide your own food.
Rating: 7/10

International House:
Consists of approximately 50% Aussies and 50% Internationals from all countries from the US to Japan. Majority of 'blocks' have 3 floors, with 10 people on each floor, split into two sections by the kitchen and lounge areas. So you will get to know the 5 you are with really well, and the other 5 pretty well. There are courtyards and paths which seperate the blocks, and a few blocks with non-catered apartments for the older people and those who want to get away from noise. These guys like to party like Teds, but I think are a little more tamer (sp?) than Teds.
Rating: 9/10

Edwards Hall (TEDS):
If you're a party animal and like interracting with people, then this is the place for you. A lot of people in this college, ive got a few friends here, and they like it. The main areas of Teds are Fully-Catered, although there are non-catered apartments also. Imo this is the most popular college for 1st years. My friends say the food is pretty ordinary, but ive seen it and its not too bad, they are just whingers.

Rating: 8/10

Evatts House:
Consist of non-catered apartments, so you'll need to provide/cook your own food. Similar to International House it a lot of ways, although not as good :D(NB: Biased opinion). Not too sure what else to say about Evatt, it would suit those who are social, but not party animals like those at Teds. More space and trees between the 'blocks'.
Rating: 6/10

You have a better chance of getting in if you offer something to that college. If you do a popular sport (rugby, netball or soccer), did a bunch of extra curricular activties or are a hot slut (i just made that one up) you have better chance to get in.

However, unlike most universities, if you don't get in to college you can still experience an awesome time at uni, because newcastle is a very different sort of town.

Just wondering...what's acceptable internet usage? How much can be downloaded and is any of it monitored?

I know that downloading copyrighted material isn't allowed, but what about other material? Youtube? Porn? Streaming off websites?

It's not monitored continuously, but it is all logged into storage. So if they suspect something, or someone rats on you, then they can check everything. The policy for your university account is on the website somewhere. Basically, it says yeah, there are differing penalties for looking up porn, downloading copyright material, etc etc.

Usually all this stuff isn't made a big issue of. However, if you get caught downloading for example, 3 seasons of Friends off the uni network, you'll have to answer to IT, and you may have to pay for the bandwidth you used, like some kid got busted on last year from downloading ALL seasons of Friends, over a couple of nights.

Look up porn and you'll most likely get caught. Download music off the uni network and you may get caught (although the uni gets busted because they have Warner and Sony Music etc knocking on their doors asking to pay up, and it has happened last year too).

Other than the porn, excessive downloads and copyright, go for your life. If you're just using it to check websites, download some class files etc, download upgrades for your pc, browse on Youtube for a while, then you're fine. Pretty much, the guys are harmless in most cases.

Do these rules apply for sharing within the network?

No, people share porn between their local networks.

Um, possibly get a place in a course at the uni first. Then, go from there. :)

In a serious answer, all the rooms have their own network cables so you can connect straight up.

But yeah, its only useful knowing that once you get a room on college. Good luck with the HSC in the meantime.

Not a truer word said. Its different.
I live in Newcastle and I'm trying to understand your meaning.

It is different. In that it's seedy and violent and the pubs lock out after 1am. But in a good way?

No, you're on the right track.

I said its different because the majority of people in this town are different. In the CBD anyway.

Different meaning bogans.

If they don't have plug-in access, there's wi-fi hot spots all over the uni so get a wireless network adaptor for your laptop.

Also agree with ^

Gday everyone

I'm already studying with UNCLE by distance, which is hard as hell, and I reckon I'll make the trip up to Newcastle to study on-campus at the start of next year. I was wonderin whether it's likely that I would get a self-catered room at Ted's. I spent 4 years in a boarding house, I can't stand that shitty kinda food any more, and I love to cook and know what I'm eating. I know that Evatt are all self-catered, but I do enjoy getting up to quite a bit of mischief and throwing a few back every now and then. Plus, Teds has a pool and sauna. So anyways, what are my chances? And are there many drunken missions in Evatt?

Pool yes. Sauna, out of action. As for getting in, have at least a credit average and make sure your application is good.
