it has become fashionable to include "or otherwise" in hsc questions.
this has a long history going back to the hsc precursor, the leaving certificate - as far back as 1916.
it's not going away any time soon for in last year's hsc exams they were still doing it
here is list of or otherwises in 2024 extension 2 hsc exam: Q11eii, Q12cii, Q13aii and Q15aiii
they can be controversial because they may be construed as invocations to oos methods
there have been mixed reactions to oos solutions in recent times ranging from exuberant praise to eternal damnation!.
most starkly this came to a head in the 2023 extension 1 paper asking for area of triangle whereupon nesa provides very complicated whole-page solution
u can of course solve in 1 line with cross product - and as the question said or otherwise the method has been verified as being accepted by the hsc markers, much to the chagrin of those advocating never to do the oos methods
yet the or otherwise questions persist
so what are we to make of this - maybe try to get a non-oos solution, which is nevertheless still a or otherwise method, or perhaps accept that when they say or otherwise then anything goes?
