although no direct dot point, every textbook ive looked at has the oxidation state rules... are we required to know them?

4.2.3 is the dotpoint where oxidation states are mentioned
(account for changes in the oxidation state of species in terms of their loss or gain of electrons)

hmm i think we need to know their states or know how to figure them out. we've done excercises on them in clas, so i'm assuming you have to
though i dont know how to answer that dot point in particular

Simple say: As electrons are lost, the oxidation number increases, since oxidation is the loss of electrons. Therefore, elements have an oxidation state of 0, Na+ has an oxidation state of 1. Cl- has an oxidation state of -1, since it has in fact GAINED electrons, hence not undergoing oxidation, but reduction.

lolz ... oxidation state is simple the charge of the ion or atom...

yes, i said the rules didnt i

like:
oxygen has a charge of -2 in oxides and -1 in peroxides
Hydrogen has a charge of +1 when combined with non-metals, and -1 when combined with metals

etc
