Hello hello.
What does the different leves of oxygen we breathe in affect our body. If we were to breathe in say 40% oxygen as oppose to 21% what would happen? And in the hospital how do the bottles work? Im sure they dont pump pure oxygen into everyone..

Well oxygen's used in respiration.
so I guess
increased oxygen = increased ATP production = increased energy?
but then, even when you breathe normally you don't use up all the oxygen for respiration because you breathe out about 8% oxygen.

I know they have oxygen bars in America, I think having heaps of oxygen gives you a bit of a high.

and I think I do remember something about pure oxygen being bad.

Yes, 100% pure (taut much, sle3pe3bumz? - pure and 100% effectively mean the same thing; and no this is not a pun, but yes, I laud you for your astute learning:)) is poisonous.
The high concentration of oxygen is pretty much hyperoxia and it damages your cells.

Possible 'somethings' include one getting dizzy, nauseous, and start to involuntarily twitch; you could even start to convulse, which is never good if you're in the water, say, diving. Also, lung tissue is damaged to the extent that the damage is irreversible.

Sorry that I have to post again; I can't edit.

musagha, about purity:

Hope it helps.:)

Thanks to Without Wings for fixing up the double post. As earlier expressed, sorry for any inconvenience.

Indeed, sle3pe3bumz, it was a compliment. Absolutely.:)

By composition our atmosphere is 78% Nitrogen and 21% Oxygen and so on ...

House fires can reduce ambent oxygen levels to 17% and this is the limit before we suffocate from lack of oxygen.
Conversely 100% Oxygen can kill because we need a wee bit of Carbon Dioxide.
Hence we are used to 21% Oxygen.

O2 is a free radical; like other free radicals, it has the proclivity to react with metals to form superoxide, which may attack double-bonds in many organic systems, including the volatile unsaturated fatty acid residues in cells, and perhaps alter and damage DNA.

Sure, the human body has its own defences against such things occuring, but 100% is bound to overpower them.

Here's a link entailing stuff about free radical and the human body:
http://www.drproctor.com/crcpap2.htm
I don't know what that link is about to be honest.

Aw, thanks. Too bad I can't utilise the same level of English elsewhere; (I fathom that I have a confidence problem and esteem issues).

Bah, as if. I'm not smart; as if I am, or were.:p
But thanks. =D
