Okay I feel like I'm behind already with about a hundred major works to do!:vcross:

But anyway, could someone help me work a topic out a little?

I want to do something related to how society's expectations on women's success have changed in the last decade from having skills (as women have been encouraged to in the last thirty or so years) to just using sexuality - and how this is demonstrated through the way in which the pornographic-looking Bratz Doll has replaced the wholesome multitalented (vet, nurse, gymnast, chef, pilot, flight attendant, etc) Barbie Doll as a role model for girls.

Can someone help me play with this to narrow it down?

Thanks:D

well, if you're going to go into the sexualisation of women, you can begin by investigating the early idea of women as objects of beauty, then you can go onto the growing role of women in the workforce, and then investigate why you feel the role of women is diminishing due to an emphasis on image over skills. Maybe your thesis can be about a reversion back to the old image of women/ the diminishing image of women? To be honest-- it may be thought of as quite a cliche theme... but yeah, I suppose if its done well...

Also-- barbie is certainly not a "wholesome" role model for women. Barbie is the ultimate modern symbol of societies emphasis on appearance. She is highly sexualised. Big boobs, little waist, good childbearing hips.

No, I haven't started. This is really the only time I've had to think about it since we were given it.
And while Barbie did have those proportions, she was primarily portrayed as a symbol of someone who could do anything, from being a vet to a flight attendant, an astronaut, a soccer coach, a princess and a dentist. She was a uniting feature for women in decades where women were told they could do it all.
And in recent years, Mattel has attempted to modernize the Barbie by gradually altering her proportions every year to eventually become as realistic as possible. Whereas the company that created Bratz Dolls created Botoxed, skeezy looking dolls, in their attempt for modernization.
Anyway, any more constructive suggestions would help.

Another thing that interested me was how pre-1950, the most popular toy for girls was the baby doll - for generations of women encouraged solely to have children. From 1960-2000, the Barbie was most popular - for the generations of women flooding into the workforce in a variety of ways, in an attempt to have it all. And from 2000- onwards, the most popular doll is the Bratz - for future generations of women...manufacturing their appearance and sexuality - to who knows what effect.

So yes... thanks for your help keep it coming! :D

Oh and sorry, I did mean more sexual-based expectations of girls as opposed to women.
