Please help im really stuck (8 Viewers)

i got an offer at a 120 ranked school and i currently attend a 400-something ranked school

im not really encouraged to move there but there are some pros and cons; please help me decide what school i should choose

pros:
better scaled
obviously better resources
they offer 5/6 of the subjects i want to do

cons:
too far (takes an hour by public transport n if i do ext math - which is definite - i might need to wake up at 5 to catch 7am ext classes)
literally know no one there (no connections therefore might impact my grades for 'group' projects)
moving in yr 11 therefore i dont have a permanent class and people to hang out with
i moved to my current school this yr n i really enjoy my current school and the people here

as you can see im stuck i dont really know what to do whatsoever (i have till 6th of december)
ik that a lot are telling me that a school rank doesnt determine what your atar/hsc marks are but idk kinda wanna worry

seems like a tough situation but id say just remember that a good score is still a good score at the end of the day regardless of scaling so lock in crazy wherever you are. with that said, i reckon you stay at your school now as stability is a big factor of hsc, you don't wanna be scrambling around too much socially or quite literally physically - but if you got the drive to do it, the world is yours to conquer

Yeah I agree with certified dummy, this is probably not the best time to test new social situations or schooling situations in general. Adjusting to a whole new school you know nothing about + where you know nobody in year 11 does not sound ideal. I think it might end up affecting you a lot depending on how it plays out. Not to scare you or anything personally I would choose to stay at my current school if I was you

if youre someone who does really well academically, id say stay tbh. if you preform well you should be able to get those band 6's. the problem is that youre going to need to rank 1st in ur subjects every time, and if you falter that could really be a hit to your atar. at least if u fall in a school ranked in the 120's the person ranking above you may have a good mark. you should think about if you can continuously maintain a rank, and if ur commute time would impact on ur ability to study

you should also consider if your current school is a gateway school. usually if a school is in a lower socioeconomic area, they will consider that and bump up your atar. if the other school is ranked 120, its definitely not a gateway school,
also if this new school is a private school that makes you do SOR, thats another factor you need to consider.

general advice while i wait for you to respond:

the ranking of your school doesn't matter UNLESS your school is ranked so low that you need to be top 1-5 in all of your subjects to even band 6. if i remember on another thread abt your situation you said smth abt how you don't think it's achievable for you to be top 1-5 for all of your subjects, correct me if im wrong. consider how your cohort will perform when all the non-selective classes are mixed into the stream as well. if you want a 90+ atar, you will likely need to band 6 a decent amount of your subjects. if your school is getting 0 band 6s, how will you ensure you are the one to band 6 when you get to the hsc even if nobody else does?

the question is will you rank high internally in your current school or not? you are swimming against the current imo bc your cohort will pull you down unless you you rise up to the challenge. if you choose to stay and do well in the hsc you will have to grind and honestly speaking work harder than the kids in higher ranking schools bc they will all benefit from being pulled up by their cohorts.

or you could choose to move where you can somewhat rank a bit lower and still do well and also have better resources to help you get there. if your school gets 0 band 6s for smth and always has i would blame whatever teachers, resources, poor learning conditions, poor socioeconomic status of school and its area etc and if you think that will improve by moving schools and it will help you probably

also why do you have 7am ext classes?? ext 1 maths should fit in your timetable for most schools and for e2 maths, with most schools starting around 9 youd have to go at 8? please fact check that bc at 7am my school gates are not even unlocked let alone classes running at that time. i do several extension subjects too

sorry all of this is abt academics and stuff but and sorry if this invalidates your experiences but the other stuff you said were negatives to moving are very common experiences and the average person can cope fine with them.
ppl move all the time for y11 and they do perfectly fine socially (talking abt ppl from my old school moving to new schools)

there are SO many people that travel an hour a day for school (friends in penrith high living like beyond strathfield travelling to school daily etc.) that again thrive academically

group projects that are graded usually mean that the teacher makes sure you are put with someone at least and they are a way to make friends. til date i have not gotten a single group project in y11 or y12 that has afffected my grade, just things like collaborating on notes with ppl sitting next to you

are there other new kids or are you the only one? if there are others you can talk to them, you are not alone

if you made friends in your current school in 1 year what makes you think you can't make friends again in another year?

How do you know if a school is a getaway school? The UNSW gataway program? Bc both schools (my current one and the one i got into) do it

goal atar 90+ (i need 99.+ for optometry but realistically 90+ is alr)

ext math
adv math
adv eng
chem
physics
eco
arabic continuers and hopefully ext arabic instead of eco in yr 12 (they dont offer arabic at the school i got into so might do agri instead - i did agr in yr 9 n LOVED it)

Ok that made me relax a bit lol
abt ext classes my sister‘s ext classes at my current school start at 7:45am and finish at 8:45 (thats when the school day starts)
they call ext classes period 0 so i assumed all schools have ext classes before school?

ik sefton (bc my sisters friend goes there) has ext math classes after school but thats bc they have 3 (one before school, one during and one after)

No. I had a similar experience at another school ranked in the top 50, I eventually had to rent an apartment close to the school to manage the travel (not a joke btw we're im in hella debt after I have to start paying this stupid ahh rent) Huge pain in the ass. Surely there’s other schools bruh

it depends, if you’re going to be motivated to succeed then might as well just stay at your “local” school, if you think that you really need the change in environment (which it seems like you don’t) then imo its not really worth it. i did change schools in year 11 but the school i went to before that was really bad for me (though more highly ranked than the school i moved to), so it was worth it. otherwise, if the “extra resources” aren’t gonna be much of a benefit, then there’s not really much of a point of changing schools
