You could use the discriminant of quadratics too. As above, find the gradient of the line to be 1/2, therefore the tangent is of the form y=0.5x+b where b is a real number. Solve simultaneously with y=x
2-3x-1, you get x
2-3.5x-(b+1)=0. Since the line is a tangent to the parabola, there exists only one point of contact ie. one solution to the equation, therefore the discriminant equals zero. You can then solve for x
