is this a must for your project to have a process diary or it just makes it look better like does it say anywhere that it has to be there and is required

Definitely a must... it shows your thought proccesses and design changes and proves you have been working... even if its made up.

Hell yes. You should be writing in one on a regular basis with everything that is going on regarding the MDP. It ensures as the earlier post said that the development was authentic and it demonstrates true progression. Also its ok if its battered and not neat because it is something you have been HANDWRITING in for 12months.
