Can anyone help me with this question:

A crate of supplies for a scientific expedition to Greenland is being dropped by plane. When the supplies are dropped, the plane is travelling at 40 m/s horizontally at a height of 50 m. Sadly the parachute fails to open and the package falls to the ground at 9.8 m/s2. Find the horizontal distance travelled by the package as it falls given that it hits the ground right at the feet of the scientific party.

I think initial speed is 40 m/s
final speed is 0 m/s
g or a = 9.8 m/s2
s or delta y= 50 m

Do you use the formula:
v2y = u2y +2aydelta y

the answer is meant to be 127.8 m

Initial horizontal speed is 40m/s - initial vertical speed is 0.

To find how long it is in flight, (I'd) use s= 1/2at^2 + ut

Forget the ut bit (u=0) and then you should get t to roughly equal 3.19 secs

And yeah, then you just times that by 40 to find the range, which gives me roughly 127.something
thanks for your help bradman.
