Gleitman is the only textbook I won't part with, despite having dropped psych 2 years ago! Have fun guys, it's a top unit. 105's even better.

I agree with gtg; 105 is better. But 104 is a great introduction to psych. You get to do all the interesting things like psychpathology (which I love), and its also good if you're a science person, because you do all the neurons and chemicals and... dendrites! Oh, and perception. In the first lecture, Darren (the course co-ord) shows you this thing of faces changing between different races and how people look most attractive when they're half-caste. Its all v.v. intersting.

I love my Gleitman book. I'm keeping it coz I figure its a great point of reference, and I've gone through and highlighted it and put notes all through it... my dad's reading it atm.

Have fun chickens! :D

fornstar. when you get your gleitman book it will have a code and a website in it. This is valid for a year and it is a good source for psychology in general.

Hahah. Mine's pretty much new. It's too good an academic title to highlight and put notes over. My law books on the other hand feel the full brunt of my highlighter (mostly in the days leading up to the final exam).

As someone said, Gleitman is pretty good for links etc. A lecturer gives you a site for hermaphrodite (sp?) children which is really interesting, but I dont have it any more. Generally, when I went home after learning something new and interesting, I just googled it and read up on all the interesting aspects of it (for me, this is psychopathology-cant wait to do it next year!).

Oh, and keep this website handy for next year (as its only applicable to second year psych students)... http://www.maccs.mq.edu.au/mailman/listinfo/participants/

:)

just search the net

i remember reading a website about all these different types of experiements soooo interesting... about how these normal average people were picked to act and role play as either guards or prisoners and after a while they started actually THINKING they were that way!! (the "guards" treated the "prisoners" cruelly at night when they thought none of the experimenters were looking)

but you know whats even scarier?

that the experiementers and the psychologist himself in charge of the experiement got caught into it as well and started thinking and acting like how our governement acts by letting it all happen... it took an outsider to see what was happening and to stop the experiement from happening further...

and this was only in 2 weeks at some american university!! the experiement was supposed to go on for 2 months! imagine if it did! someone probably would've died!

anyway yeahh that was a really really good read...

I am still not sure whether to do the 5 year Barts-psych/law or transfer to the four year Bpsych course. I'm just mimicing the honours program for now and doing the units of law and after this year i will make my choice. I like psych so far, but first year seem to me too general for me to have an idea if i like it enough as a profession. And law seems like it might be interesting.

Lol fine, i searched my history and here's the link

http://www.prisonexp.org

there's this other one i gotta tell you about... where this girl was tied up, the whole time for her first 6 years, her dad was mentally retarded... anyway her brain development was remarkable... i think it was the right side of her brain that worked heaps heaps well, better than any other human tested in history, whereas the other side of the brain was virtually dead.... they found she was heaps advanced in spatial but not language and that (obviously)

anyway imagine being tied up onto a table for 6 years straight, she'de urinate and defacate on herself, it was disgusting, you woulda hoped she'de died early on instead of having to suffer for 6 years ... anyway its awful... that was another site, her body development was servere too, no freedom to move or anything for 6 years!! :s

That one about the prisoners, that was a Solomon Ashe experiment, wasnt it? I was under the impression (by Gleitman) that he stopped the experiment, because he could see how whacko the participants were becomming...

meh. either way, it is a good read. This is why I do psych: to learn about all the abnormal things in the world. its fantastic! :D

Hmm.. I just read the link from clairegirl. it must be a re-make of Ashe's experiment because he wasnt acknowledged at all anywhere in the article. its all v. intersting stuff... a bit scary.. only in America!

I loved the bit where the friend comes in and askes 'whats the independent variable?' and the experimenter is more concerned with the prisoners escaping! Classic! :D
