Sorry guys I tried to revive the old thread but I couldnt find it!

Just a quick question regarding the soma and protein distribution. Remember Jen drew that diagram with the soma and the rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum? I get confused when it gets to the Golgi apparatus stage: are both the rough and smooth ER proteins distributed through the Golgi? Or do only the smooth ones (because the rough ER packages the proteins into vesicles, and sends them to the axon terminal).

.... But then I think it would make more sense if the Golgi was included in the rough ER proteins moreso than the smooth ones because the rough ones are membrane proteins (and so would need more specialised direction), whereas the smooth proteins stay within the soma....

Help?

i remember when i drew the diagram that after they are made, the protein go to either the rough endoplasmic reticulum or smooth ER. Even though the smooth ones stay in the soma i remember drawing an arrow that says they go through the Golgi apparatus too. I get what your saying though, because you would think that the protein in the smooth ER wouldnt need to go to the golgi because they just stay in the soma (and golgi transports elsewhere). to complicate things- some protein from the rough ER also transverse into the smooth ER protein pathways, maybe it is those 'special' ones that go through golgi, and the smooth ones dont go at all.. or maybe im just very confused!

lol, ta James!

I might email Jen and try and clear it up because she said it was important for us to know it, and that two questions are going to be from it....
