why do different courses contribute to your uai in different proportions depending on how well you do?
i always thought 2 units = 2 units.
Is this all part of UAC's weird way to calculating uai?
and btw does anyone know how the UAC calculates uai specifically?

All of your courses have the potential to contribute equally to your UAI.

But each unit is worth 50 marks. Gaining 40/50 in one unit will contribute more than 35/50 in another unit.

Which part of the process are you referring to? I don't think there are many gaps in my own knowledge... but it's hard to know for sure. I know enough to simulate the official process, at least.

Well I know your HSC results are sent to the BOS and UAC separately, each having independent systems for judging the marks. I know enough about how BOS does it, but I know nothing about what the UAC does.
