help would be appreciated if possible..

has anyone done any of these units:

Australian Society
Passion, Rebellion, Identity in Popular Music
Critical Thinking
Introductory to Popular Culture and Society

if so, could you please tell me if it's a massive work load, any information would be helpful, like if they are hard, and any other suggestions, just basically any information or advice from people who have undertaken and completed these units. Thankyou in advance :)

Hey

Yep, I did SOC180 (pop culture) in second semester, and it was great! V. interesting, the workloads extremely doable (the readers long, and some are v. boring eg:semiotics, but most are interesting and well written), but as I've said before somewhere on this forum, Sociology is extremely subjective and thus the lecturers and tutors are v. picky when it comes to marking. If they dont agree, or if you don't give enough evidence to back it up, or its too general, they will comment on it and mark you down. This happened in my last essay; it was an "excellent, original, but risky" topic. The end of year exam is so so easy; multi choice short answer/essay questions. I went into that exam freaking out, and came out with a massive grin because it's so general knowledge. If you go to the lectures and the tutes, you'll easily get at least a Cr.

I did Critical thinking.

It was definitely one of my easier subjects. It really depends, i found it very easy, but my friend found it hard. Being good at english is definitely not a good reason to do it,but if you are into arguments and exploring fallacies, then critical thinking is for you (i was hopeless in HSC english and i did very well in Critical thinking, so again, being good at arguments and being good at english are not one in the same).

As for workload, it was withough a doubt the unit with the least workload! there is a recommended text (which i highly recommend you get! because it is very helpful, it should actually be compulsory) but besides that, if u know the stuff in the lectures then you will do fine.

Marks were (as i remember them, anywayz):

two 25% exams (in lecture time)
10% Participation
10% online quiz and
30% end of year ESSAY.

What i liked about this unit is that there was NO end of year exam, which definitely makes life easier for you, and allows you to concentrate on your other units, and even though the essay was due in exam period, you have heaps of time to do it. The essay was just criticising an argument (for and against) using the fallacies you learn in the subject, which i found really easy and reasonably interesting to do (interresting, as far as essays go of course).

Critical thinking i would recommend, but then again, it MIGHT not be what you like, im probably weird, because my friend (he is good at english) did not like it that much.

Anywayz, hope that helps you :)

I did critical thinking as well last year..its like what pheonix said and with the workload its reaaally light as long as you can get your head around the premises that the course give you, but if you dont actually get it its a bit hard.
The text book shouldnt matter too much cos its should be the same ideas circulating around and plus there was no comp text book anyway:p
