If you've got reasonable specs for your PC with a decent video card (and by decent I mean atleast Radeon 9800PRO or Gf FX5950 if you wanna run these at reasonable frame rates with good quality settings) then:

- Half Life 2 (classic)
- Unreal Tournament 2004 (multiplayer focused fun)
- Doom 3 (forget this one if you don't have a reasonably high-end system)
- Far Cry (needs a pretty decent system too to run smoothly at med-high settings)
- Painkiller (Quake-like shooter, very fast paced and a nice brainless relaxer after a hard day at work)
- Battlefield 2 (like UT2k4, multiplayer based with vehicle support, however set in the 21st century. Needs a decent system to run)
- F.E.A.R (coming out soon, it's a very well made horror FPS, scored 92% in PC Gamer)
- Quake 4 (coming out soon)

These are pretty much most or all of the recent FPS out in the market which are regarded as 'good-great'.. i.e high consumer/reviewer scores.

Yeh, I agree with HL2 and Far Cry. The worlds are so immense and interactivity (esp. with HL2) really enhances realism and of course overall enjoyment. At the very moment I'm playing through it again and it's great.

With Doom 3, it was undeniably scary, however I still found it a bit boring. I think the environment in general got a bit dull and repetitive after awhile. If you've got a fast internet connection, download a 320MB movie demo of F.E.A.R from Gamespot (if you don't know anything about this game).. or even better the playable demo. I thought it was pretty scary.. the supernatural themes in it just seems to be to be alot better executed than Doom. The AI for the enemies in this game are unbeliveable. Soldiers give cover fire at your position so their comrades can go flank you from the sides. Graphics are great, you can slow down time and engage in Matrix-style moves in first-person (although that might sound lame, in practicality it actually works quite well) and the plot is good. Doom 3 imo gave you sudden shocks and thrills, but this is the game that wets my underpants and makes me wanna call for mummy.

As for threadstarter, I agree if he enjoyed CS then Battlefield 2 seems a good choice.
