Reformating XP to remove a virus? (1 Viewer)

hey all,
=( the virus "W32.Tibick" appears to be spreading through my comp and even though Norton has deleted 4000+ of the files it detected, it cannot remove this one program "Webp2pinstaller.exe" which seems to be duplicating itself through my comp.. so in order to fix this problem, is reformating the way to go? one of my friends told me that reformating wont make the virus go away but i remember reading somewhere that reformating is an option?

format it, turn off comp...that'll remove viruses in the RAM...then reinstall windows

it makes my comp run super slow and all my programs are really really laggy right now

Reformatting wipes the hard drive. Rest assured, any virus in your files will be wiped out too. If you cannot use system restore, formatting might be the way to go with that many infections.

The easiest way to format XP is to go into setup at the start up and select boot from CD-ROM. Then put in your XP CD and restart. It will boot from the CD-ROM and then give you the option of formatting before you reinstall. Formatting is the easiest way to fix your computer just make sure you back up your files first.

but what if the files contain viruses...when burnt to a cd-r/ dvd+-r then its unerasable....permanent virus on ur cd/dvd

its just a polygrahpic virus so its orgin must b from one file but however just uninstall any P2P networks n download Mircosoft Anti-Spyware n see if that doesn anything bcoz i feel wiping out computer is extreme

well put aaaman, norton isn't a very broad antispyware program, and often deletes infected neccesary files, in turn breaking ur comp, mircosoft anitispyware will find and get rid of any virus safely and effectively, when I ran it the first time it got rid of soooo many that norton couldn't find, and don't bother with ad-aware or spybot search and destroy.

And I am very very very stongly against formatting, it should only be used as a last resort after all the other last resorts and then, only if advised by a computer specialist. When it comes to formatting, there's always another way.

true and the only reason y mircosoft antispyware is the best is because it knows the system registry of ur system ( the strings of coding that make up windows) n from that it can easily tell how something it doin somethin against the users wishes like annoyin pop up adds!!! grr y do ppl do them 4. i hope they die

oh i 4got, seach up the virus name in mircosoft seach database to see if the company has made any removal tools n also most importantly, "ALWAYS UPDATE WINDOWS" (dis doesnt count SP2 sicne that its still shit in my eyes n it still needs bugs removed)

if u have windows xp, go 2 task manager then go 2 processors n have a look @ wat ur CPU is doing, like if u see programs running against ur will then u kno wwat or who is controlling them. pm me if u got more hassles
