I was told by my careers advisor and uni represents that come to your school that the RET schemes don't work for medicine because you need 'the best of the best' candidates. They also don't work for double degrees but it is best to check up by contacting the uni itself.

Also don't you need a really good UAI and UMAT score before you get offered an interview?

you get offerd interviews after umat scores are released because you school submits a 'predicted' uai.

then you may also get offered an interview after uai's are released of that was higher than expected

Oh right, thanks. :)

How many bonus points are you expecting to receive? (I'm aware you get different points with different uni's.)

From Soulsearchers link:

What courses can I apply for with RET?

You can apply for a place in any UWS undergraduate award course offered through UAC except those listed below, as additional selection criteria apply.

For information on courses and cut-offs, please refer to Table 1 and Part 2 of the UAC 2007 Guide (available July 2006).

The following courses are NOT available through RET as additional selection criteria apply:

UAC Code Course
704200 B Health Science (Nursing)
705600 B Laws (Graduate Entry)
705625 B Laws (Graduate Entry)
705650 B Laws (Non-Graduate Entry)
707325 B Early Childhood Studies (Child and Family)
707885 B Performance
708175 B Electronic Arts
708200 B Fine Arts
708225 B Music
Med isnt there, so I guess you can :)

The cut-off UAI for UWS MBBS in 2006 was 92.00 (I'm assuming it's the same for 2007? Or possibly a few points higher). Once you reach a UAI of 92.00, the UWS selectors don't consider your UAI anymore, all they consider if your Interview which is 60% of the selection, and your UMAT score which is 40% part of the selection. Equal scoring candidates will get judged of how well they went in the UMAT.

I'm pretty sure that there is a Regional Entry Scheme for MBBS UWS.

okay here it goes....well apparently the RET can be used for medicine....their website doesnt say anything about it! anyways selection is based on people who get over the 92 UAI threshold. i think the RET would increase ur chances if u didnt do well in UMAT. plz correct me any1 if im wrong...and yes i am in the area. lets hope the min uai never changes!!!

:mad1: i emailed the uni and this is what the replyed sadly

Thank you for your enquiry. The Regional Entry Test (RET) is not able to
be used for entry to the B Medicine / B Surgery course.

A UAI of 92 and completion of UMAT are the application requirements. If
an applicant meets the threshold for UMAT, they will be invited to
complete an interview. If the person is competitive to gain entry based
on these three requirements, the person receives an offer to the course.

For course information, please refer to the following link:
http://handbook.uws.edu.au/HBOOK/course.asp?course=4641.1

If you have any questions, please call the UWS Course Information Centre
on 1800 897 669 or reply to this email.

Kind Regards
Amy

Actually, I'd expect that much like UNSW, they give more leeway to rural students.
i believe that they want local western sydney students because they want to increase the number of docs in the area, but i guess the RET isnt part of their way of attracting locals. shame though
