imo you need texts from diff time periods/cultures/societies etc in order to effectivelly understand how the genre has evolved etc
texts that i think are pretty substantial for this are
The Spanish Tragedy
The Life and Loves of a She Devil
The Stars Tennis Balls
Whitedevil (didn't use it but heard it's good)
Hamlet (Branagh or Shakespeare- take your pick)

Some other good ones to show the evolution of the genre are Unforgiven and The Searchers (westerns), The Crow, The Limey, Memento, The Count of Monte Cristo, Titus (all recent films)...there are heaps more, but to show evolution you should also show how the texts subvert the genre, making it accessable to audiences today, and perhaps showing something interesting about society today, as we apparently don't condone R/T, but still watch it happen in movies with facination.
