Remarkable pro/2 vs an ipad? (1 Viewer)

I really want to use a portable device for note taking during my senior years. I hate carrying around textbooks as I end up having my notes everywhere sometimes even in the wrong book..which succkss for studying.

--> So at first I thought about getting an ipad 10th or a 9th gen. But i know that if I do get it I'd be really distracted with using other apps. And i know for a fact i will be, it's not something i can discipline myself to not be.
--> I was then reading a few threads and some people mentioned a remarkable. I think it's really great as you do not have unnecessary apps.. i've used one before and am genuinely comfortable using one.

However the issue is that the price difference is soo much. I could get an iPad 10th Gen 64gb for $500 for a numerous amount of benefits, while a remarkable pro costs $999 at most.

Does anyone have a good idea on both or either of these products and what is truely worth it, for both academic gain and is financially reasonable!?

I have JBHI-FI gift cards $250 atm and unsure if I'm getting more.

In my opinion, the answer is simple; Remarkable if you have the money, and iPad if you'd prefer to save money.

I personally think the Remarkable is perfect for a single-use device just for digital notetaking. You won't understand the benefits associated with it until you actually use one; the experience with e-ink as well as the fact you are virtually undistracted is such a game changer.

To be honest the only person who can answer this is you - you need to consider your personal needs.
You should remember that there's a lot more you can do on an iPad (accessing apps/websites related to study).
If you do go the iPad route, get a matte/anti-glare screen protector. They feel paper-like and look a lot better as compared to the usual experience.

I was literally going to say this. I use an iPad and it’s clutch, don’t have to go printing past papers and the fact u can use other apps is a positive in my eyes. But to avoid distraction I just kept 3 school related apps and 1 notetaking app (notability) and all these apps were on 1 page cause I removed the factory apps from home screen. that would be a horrible experience. cheap styluses rely on physical pressure to work, functioning like a basic touchscreen stylus (basically the same thing as using your finger to write). this results in horrible precision, no pressure sensitivity, and no palm rejection. on the other hand, an apple pencil actually uses the ipad's digitiser and functions a lot more smoothly.

they do NOT work the same wtf.. i'm not advocating specifically for an apple pencil but at least get something proper

I think getting an iPad is better because of its versatility. U can use it for other stuff too like annotating books and pdfs, scanning documents, etc. if u think ur going to get distracted with the apps, put time limits on them so u can access them during school or just only download school related apps on ur iPad

tbh it just depends on what pencil ur getting

i have never gotten a real pen but ive had two (currently using one)

it feel EXACTLY like an apple pen, does the same feature, a bit longer than the real one tho

just get a flip/spin laptop. i have one which lets you use as a laptop or u just fold it to an ipad and write like that. Plus its not over the top priced and it works.

I use a galaxy tab s9 ultra since it was on like 40% sale at the start of 2024 and it's all I need really
Just get whatever's cheap and you'll be fine ngl (if you're using the tablet purely for notetaking)

the main selling point & appeal isn't that its 'distraction free'; its the e-ink display. although i agree with you to a certain extent

yeah, your results follow exactly what i said pretty much - the second thing you bought was an 'active' stylus, and the first one you bought was one of those shitty stencils

i got a remarkable. Yeah the subscription is really rubbish, but other than that I find it really good to use for straight studying, however I agree, it is way too expensive.
Also in regard to past papers, remarkable allows for pdf imports so it works aswell.

I may just ask my dad if i can use his remarkable, I haven't seen him use it for work since last year. But he might say no cuz it was payed by his work...If that happens I'll probably get the ipad or galaxy tab instead

i have an ipad 10th gen i got around this time last year myself and that plus an apple pencil (reminder that 10th gen uses the usb-c pencil) and a keyboard case (+ a subscription to goodnotes 6 if you're planning for that) is still less expensive than a remarkable. the thing with an ipad tho is that you won't get distracted with using other apps if you don't install any unnecessary apps cos on ipad it's all just default apps (so unless you get distracted with like the notes app it shouldn't be an issue). personally while i do think the remarkable is good for more focus, as someone who gets easily distracted myself that distraction isn't worth the extra $400. not to mention the ipad has way more features and is more versatile at a cheaper price as well

in terms of usage i bring a computer to uni as well but in lectures i directly annotate on the slides with a pencil and goodnotes and it's pretty efficient (better than copying down the lecture onto microsoft word cos i can add extra bits that the lecturer is saying etc etc + extra clarifications for myself) so i do think whatever you get academically you will be fine but now it's just considering your own preferences for performance + interface etc etc. goodnotes + notability are apps that have been well-tailored for students using the ipad for notes. some people suggested buying a "paper" screen protector and while i have friends who have them, i personally don't but there's no major difference unless you like the "feel" of writing on paper on your ipad

ngl pressure sensitivity is really not an issue unless you're an artist using the ipad and the pencil to draw

not to mention that a lot of cheaper styluses i've seen do have palm rejection and precision tech now, esp the ones i see at officeworks etc etc. i was actually gonna get a laser stylus that was brought up earlier cos it's cheaper but then i got the apple pencil as a gift and while i do like my apple pencil if you don't want to spend a lot of money there's nothing wrong with getting cheaper third-party styluses as long as you do your research (especially with companies that do make quality ones like logitech and laserco. it's not like the person's gonna buy some $3 pencil off some shady seller on amazon)

i like the look of the remarkable and the e ink is really cool but tbh, just never connect your ipad to the internet or don't log into the app store if you're buying it solely to escape distractions. otherwise, use pen and paper, and buy a cheap tablet to look at pdfs if your issue is that u click off thsc or whatever (personally this is why i have physical copies of textbooks that i use in uni that aren't super expensive. you can play music or whatever through headphones, then turn off display/pull up a blank image, and there's no distracting light at all, which is really useful for reading big chunks of text when self learning. but for pdfs, there's no escape [unless u print it out])
