Hey guys. We're studying the Weimar Republic and the rise of Hitler atm, and I don't understand the concept of the right and left wings. My teacher said the extreme form of the left is communism, and extreme form of the right is fascism. Any short explanation I would be very thankful for...lol, if it can be explained in a short way. :p

very simply right wing is conservative and left wing is progressive. the more right you go the more conservative you are(ie nazi's wanting to return to monarchy or closest option ie dictator) and the more left you go the more you want a progressive, everyone equal, state controlled country(ie state controls everything[communism] so head of state has all power ie dictator). keep in mind that both USSR and Nazi were authoritarian version of the extreme left and right(go to www.politicalcompass.org to read about authoritarian/libertarian)
if we were to do a left to right spectrum of aussie politics it would be
solcialist alliance - greens - labor - democrats - liberal - national(yeah they're in coalition but country people tend to be more conservative/traditional) - one nation
hope this helps

very small nutshell of left and right wing

yes i agree, left and right refers to politics economically. (in a very small nutshell) left is supportive of everyone having equal wealth and lots of social welfare (so relatively high taxes). right supports 'laissez faire' which basically means fend for yourself/user pays system - so low taxes and freedom for people to get rich, but if they should fail then there is no support for them from the state.

lots of people take left and right in social politics - right wing is then the conservative (racist, anti abortion, anti homos, anti divorce, anti contraception etc) one and left wing is progressive (pro for all the antis mentioned above)
