Hence why people like us need to test it to ensure there are no problems or bugs/errors.

You cannot expect anyone to come and program something perfectly in one go.

From the feedback shown already, it is clear that the UAI predictor has proven itself accurate. But of course errors may/could of occurred which is why you need to show and prove the discreptancy in the UAI shown to Laz to ensure the problem is fixed, if the problem even exists in the first place.

soso, how about your share the marks to Laz providing a legitimate screenshot of what you are entering and the results from it.

As the results are not mine it has taken a little time to get them. Here is one set. Let me say my criticism is not of a spiteful nature. I have not called anyone names or said anything that wasn't true. If there is a problem it can be fixed but only when the problem comes to light. If there is a 'wrong' way to enter information then may be an adjustment is needed in the instructions.

So lets call this student Wendy

Wendy had an interesting experience in ext hist.
She was told she was brilliant, received a mark that made her first in the year. There were 10 in her class. 8 got band 1 and 2 got band 2.

An anomolous appeal was held. All papers re-marked and the marking was found to be fair.

The teacher taught most lessons at the local Macdomalds. She is also very highly placed as an HSC history marker. What should wendy do now??????

UAI is 68.20

Now from my personal view, I'd believe that is quite correct. Your state in your first post saying it was 20 UAI points away sounds wrong. It would of made it 48.20 or 88.20, both being an unrealistic UAI for for those type of marks/subjects. Can you please show us a screenshot of the UAI you saw as opposed to the one I just posted? Because SAM seems to be more correct in my honest opinion - unless that set of marks you used were not the one's you mentioned in the first post.

At this stage it's probably too late to do anything, though it will not hurt trying to ask why this was the case. This shows that coming first in a subject doesn't always mean the student will achieve a high mark. The teacher may not have covered the topics correctly and may have given false hope to the students. A direct complaint hould be made if you really want to take any action.

SAM estimated her UAI as 88. I do not have a screen shot of our calculations.

My point is that following the instructions wendy got 88 So there must be room for error in the instructions. Please dont say to us you must have done this or that did yout ry more than once or different ways etc etc the answer is yes.

Please don't keep abusing me , telling me to show respect or blaming me for the end of the universe. Lets try and fix this obvious problem

It does cause distress and may have significant consequences

We are not here to abuse you, we want you to come out and tell us what the problem is so it can be fixed. How about you direct us about the steps you took to get that 88 UAI?

Mine showed 68 from the marks you gave us, and if you inputted those marks into SAM yourself with those particular subjects, you'd also attain a UAI of 68.

I'm still not sure how you can come up with 88, can you enlighten us?

Can you also link me to the instructions you followed since you did say you followed a set of instructions.

Are these her examination marks, or are they the combined HSC marks? SAM can only deal with HSC marks.

I don't believe that SAM actually has any instructions at this point in time... except perhaps the tip that marks for 1-unit courses should be entered out of 50. I'm not really following you.

There is very little that Wendy can do, but there are a number of things that she should do. For example, writing very strong letters of complaint to both her principal and the Board, detailing the unprofessionalism of this particular teacher. I doubt Wendy would want the same 'injustices' to be experienced by others in the future. And it isn't worth trying to have her marks or UAI altered at this stage.

The difference between the calculated 68.20 and the actual 73.60 can probably be explained by the fact that you have only given us marks for 9 units. Students must have completed at least 10 units in order to be eligible for a UAI.

you didn't take into account accelerated subjects/distinction courses

perhaps subjects completed outside of school, such as some languages

lol, this shows a bug in SAM....

It should give warning if it is less then 10 units

Well your marks and UAI are uncertain. One scenario

A student may worry become stressed. Decides on getting an estimate, pays money, Prediction overestimates result, student has enrealistic expectations, result comes out, results worse than prediction, student shattered, hasn't made application to options that closed in september 2003 such as high demand TAFE course or Maquarie Diploma of Languages as SAM suggested no need to, then nowhere to go amd despair sets in

Not an unbelievable consequence
can i just add, do not base uni preferences on what SAM tells you. do not expect marks that SAM tells you. it is merey for interest sake, you do NOT EVER take a chance and not apply for things because something on the net told you not to.

i don't even know how the scenario above is possible. what marks did this student put into SAM? their school assessment marks, which have nothing to do with the HSC marks? SAM is useless in this situation.

SAM has been accurate for the past students of my school who have entered their marks...
To put it simply. I like it a lot.

Those people who have problems should think more about what they're putting into SAM. Human error is causing these 'botched' results.

In which year did Wendy complete her Accounting course?

2002: 74.95
2003: 74.55

Actual: 73.60

Whilst SAM is usually closer, I don't think that error margin is unreasonable... do you?

grr, JUAIseek is a bit further off

the error margin is due to the fact the some courses are below the 25th percentile

2002 accounting: 75.05
2003 accounting: 74.8

actual: 73.6

Well I didnt do the original entering of data. I do know that the projected UAI was not accurate. That they did what was asked of them and there is some margin of error on occasions.

I note someone else also had a similar error in the projection. So an error is possible. I am not surprised no-one else has come forward after reading the responses to my post. They are not the type of comment that encourages the free exchange of information.

This does not mean I am a problem or what I am saying is not true/possible and it does not give anyone the right to be rude abusive and just plain nasty.

I am done with the discussion. It is going nowhere

Soso, I have no doubt that had you presented your original post in a more helpful manner, rather than saying "My friend used it and her sister used it and it gave them 20 marks too many. Very disappointing :chainsaw: :chainsaw:" you would have received more appropriate replies.

I note someone else also had a similar error in the projection. So an error is possible.
This was resolved as being yet another case of wrongly entered data.

I am not surprised no-one else has come forward after reading the responses to my post. They are not the type of comment that encourages the free exchange of information.
I have always encouraged users to share their true comments and thoughts regarding the program - hence the existence of this forum. Users are free to contact me privately, either by email or PM, if they feel that some kind of error has occurred. I have received no such communications (people prefer to make such complaints in public).

I am done with the discussion. It is going nowhere
And so, we are left without a resolution? After three pages of investigation? Why did you say anything in the first place?

Because its a free country with free speach, still. Nothing changes unless people tell the truth.

Nothing is perfect but things can be improved.

'And so, we are left without a resolution? After three pages of investigation? Why did you say anything in the first place?'

You dont want comments unless they are favourable?

I saw this site as a free speech site. I am surprised at the reactions. It is just over the top

The users of this forum do not speak for me. With every post in this thread, I have only tried to investigate.

What is the resolution? Was a mistake made in entering the marks? Is SAM unable to handle anomalous students? I certainly haven't seen anything conclusive. Should I be altering or creating anything because of this thread? Perhaps a template for complaints.

I don't like to make assumptions. I'm at a loss.
