Does anyone know exactly what mark a response would have to get in order to be considered in the "high mark range" for those Sample Answer books? Coz I was reading through the 2003 book and came across a 322 word short story in the high mark range...even though it's quality over quantity, how could you get 13-15 (what I consider to be high at the very least) with such a short response?

i agree wif u rench, but again (i assume u are refering 2 the creative writing in the aos) the marker are looking for certain things. mabey this person did that, thats the difference between a band 6 english student and a band 6 4u maths student ;)

Well, a Band 5/6 response would have to have got around 12.5-13/15 raw, which I find to be incredible for a 322 word response.

The bad thing about these new sample answer books is that the categorising is rather vague..."high", "medium", "low" etc. I like the original Standards Packages where you could actually see a response for each cut-off.

Is that the one about a tiger and a bushfire? I remember reading that last year. Quite a short story. It was kind of vague as well (as in how it related to change). I guess the markers like vague things :)

The thing about stories (and esays) is that they are marked as a first draft so it is impossible to consider them flawless. Again, its a matter of quality- i read a really short piece on Journeys that scored a high range and the concept was well though out and the purpose clear (+ they used humour ;)) The markers especially look to give more marks if the story relates to the stimulus material (or quote, ect) so its possible to conclude that it dosen't have to be perfect to get 90+

Yep...that one.
I was amazed when I realised it was only 2.5 pages...admittedly the language used wasn't too bad but it seriously looked like a last minute job.

I guess with the creative piece, purpose and audience come first as well as the stimulus if there is one. Nevertheless, I would think that you'd need at least 750 words to establish some sort of conflict and resolution, particularly since journeys involve several elements such as obstacles and change.
