How do they determine the academic ability of students doing the courses to determine the sclae mark??
I mean some students in the course are outstanding and some are really crap.

dont they compare the students in the courses and how they did in all their other subjects? e.g. people doing lower levels will generally do worse in other subjects?

I read the thread and understood what Cyph is saying, But it's a bit too generalised. e.g. "students in Mathematics Extension 2 who are not only intelligent, but hard-working, dedicated, committed to their studies" Are you sure??? EVERY maths extension 2 students are hard-working...etc.?????? How do you justified me as a student in say Biology, doesn't scaled as high as extension 2 maths and I'm hard-working commited.....??

yes u have to generalise, because scaling on the whole depends on the whole candiatures performance, not jus individuals
yes, there will always be 4U students that never study etc, but thats in the minority

yeah so if for some reason everyone in 4u fails this year, then the scaling will be horrible

but looking at trends from previous years its highly unlikely

erm... doesnt scaling also largely depend on the difficulty of the course? pshhh its ext 2, they expect u to get half the exam wrong! :p

So say for gepgraphy, the scaling is 25, (not scale up or down)that means 50% of the students doing geography is hard-working, committed...blah blah blah. while the other 50% is lazy, unintelliegent etc.??

no, that has nothing to do with it
difficulty is in no way taken into account with scaling
however, having said that, ur likely to find that the more difficult subjects do scale better..

So... if ur an adaptive person and u wanna maximise ur uai, and since technically difficulty plays no part in scaling, then choosing subjects where ur likely to compete with bludgers is the way to go?

well, if u choose to do that, u'd have to get an HSC mark close to 100 in every subject to take advantage of that subjects poor scaling

As a not-so-hard working Ext 2 maths student, I am the perfect answer to your doubt.

Whats going on with Information Technology then?
The highest mark in 2002 was 93.2 and that comes down to 87.4 after scaling. With Physics, the highest mark was 98.2 and that goes up to 100. So do we say that the top person for Physics works so hard that they deserve more while the top person for IT does not work hard enough and deserves less? Or there is a big gap between the quality of the students? This is assuming difficulty does not affect scaling.

You can't compare aligned marks with scaled marks.

I quote from the scaling report -

When reading the table it must be remembered that the Board's HSC mark indicates
a standard reached whereas a scaled mark indicates a students position in the course
candidature if all students had completed that course. Because HSC marks and scaled
marks serve these two different purposes, comparing HSC and scaled marks is of no
value, and can lead to misinterpretations that may affect student choices of courses
to study.

The primary purpose of Table A3 is to show the relativities between courses, not
differences between HSC marks and scaled marks. Comparisons should therefore be
made between patterns of scaled marks across courses, not between HSC marks and
scaled marks.

The assumption that difficulty does not affect scaling is correct.

HSC marks are in decimals...but they are rounded to the nearest whole number wen given to u
and anyway, thats the exact HSC mark for that exact percentile, thats why its a decimal
