Yes it is possible but if it's for your school talk to your school administrator about it, i'm sure your school has some sort of dedicated server with broadband which can host it. Because if you were to get some free hosting service it has limited bandwidth for you and usually it's like 100 megs transfer once that's exceeded your site will be temporarily be taken down and after an hour or so it will restart.

forums like vBulliten (this one) usually have a demo version.
However, as winston said, they are prolly inadequate for a whole school.

To get full version costs money.

grab the invision boards...they are free and are better looking compared to these outdated ( nothing wrong just visually lacking ) boards

Not a problem, it's good idea actually at least if teachers wanted to do post something they can post an announcment on the forums and any last minute questions b4 the exams ur school teachers can go on and help.

As your dedicated server (DET based probably) may not support all versions of code.

They have scripts for the most common web interface languages and inside you just want "Scripts and Programs" then "Discussion Boards"

Then extract, upload, run the install script, and Bob's your uncle :)
