Med Sci, Advanced Sci of Specific Science Degree?

Hey,

Im having a hard time choosing between some degrees (dont worry, im deferring this yr if you are thinking its too late to be asking!).

I got an offer for Med Sci at UNSW. However I have been looking at the degree BSc (Molecular Biology and Genetics) at Usyd, and it is starting to sound more appealing, because I love genetics. And im also thinking about BSc (Advanced) at USyd.

Ive got a couple of random qs to help me make up my mind, and im a bit confused about the 'majors' and subject areas and 'areas of specialisation' etc.

1. What are the limitations of each of the courses?

2. Is it possible to major in Genetics in Med Sci at UNSW? Youd think med sci would have genetics as a major, and ive heard it does, but on the website it lists 'areas of specialisation' but it doesnt include genetics. How much genetics would be in a med sci course?

3. What is the difference between BSc (advanced) and just Bsc?

4. Is it possible to major in Genetics in Advanced Sci at Usyd? Its not on the list on the website once again, but just double checking.

Although the Molecular Bio & Genetics course contains all my ideal subjects, i would like the freedom to explore other areas (a few of the med sci subjects interest me), so it seems a bit restricitve. However im not sure how much the other courses would let me pursure genetics as a major.

Any help would be much apreciated. Thanks in advance.

Molecular Biology (aka biochemistry) and genetics is central to a lot of current scientific research approach in recent times. By doing these subjects (in particular biochem) you will open yourself to a wide range of opportunities in other areas of research as well.

You might want to check out the O-Week forums at http://www.oweek.unsw.edu.au/forums. There are a number of O-Week volunteers (Yellowshirts) there who are studying the degrees you're asking about, so you might be able to get some more informations from them.

BMedSc has more major on offer than BSc (Molecular Biology and Genetics) at USyd. That's the only difference.

No major difference. In UNSW, Adv science are required to take at least two advanced subjects per year.

I am pretty sure you can major in Genetics in Adv Science at Usyd.


I think my final suggestion is take MedSc over BSc (Molecular Biology and Genetics). That degree is way too narrow because it restrict you and you just major in that. In MedSc you have to option to explore other areas which may be of your interest. Initially I put BSc (Molecular Biology and Genetics) as my top preference but I chose to change it to MedSc because the degree is very inflexible compared with MedSc and people have actually told me that you don't get much "free choice" in the degree. Luckily I chose MedSc because uni genetics is not what I expected (I thought I was gonna major in genetics in my degree too! but I didn't like genetics at the end).
