Hey all!! I am currently undertaking the HSC community and family studies course. A a part of this course, I am required to complete an Independent Research Project. My focus for this IRP is:
"Can the influence of media lead to the development of disordered eating in adolescents?"
I am in need of a female or male who has experienced disordered eating and/or an eating disorder as an adolescent to answer a few interview questions as this will help me to gain very useful information. You have the right to remain anonymous and if you feel uncomfortable at any time you do not have to continue.
If you are willing and able to participate in my interview, please email me your age, gender and responses to: humphriesm@wwstu.catholic.edu.au
The questions are:
1.Do you have any experience with disordered eating and/or eating disorders in adolescents? Please explain (you have experienced an eating disorder, you have no experience etc.)
2.Do you believe that disordered eating and eating disorders are becoming more common in adolescents? Why?
3.How do you think female standards and physiques are portrayed through the media?
4.How do you think male standards and physiques are portrayed through the media?
5.What type/s of media (internet, movies etc.) do you believe promotes the standards and physiques identified in question 3 and 4 the most?
6.Do you think that adolescents may alter their eating behaviours (dieting, purging etc.) in attempt to achieve the standards and physiques promoted by the media? Why?
7.Do you believe that females or males are more likely to develop disordered eating as a result of the media? Why?
8.Have you ever felt pressured to look or act a certain way due to the media’s messages of standards and physiques specific to your gender? Why?
9.Have your eating behaviours altered in any way in attempt to achieve the standards and physiques portrayed in the media? How?
10.If your eating behaviours have altered in any way in attempt to achieve the standards and physiques portrayed by the media, what was the reasoning behind this? (To lose weight, to be validated etc.)
11.If disordered eating is developed in an adolescent due to the media’s messages, do you believe this can then lead to the development of an eating disorder? Why?
12.Do you believe that any other major factors (family, peers, genetics, personality etc.) can lead to the development of disordered eating or eating disorders in adolescents?
13.Am I allowed to use your name in my IRP report or do you wish to remain anonymous?
