look here
1/3 = 0.333....

if
1/3 *3 = 1

therefore
0.333.... *3 = 1

but really...
0.333...*3 = 0.999...

so i can say 0.999... = 1 (shown from above)

my question is, is my working out from above correct?
coz i know its wrong since 0.999... can not equal 1

x = 0.999....
10x = 9.999....

10x - x = 9.999... - 0.999...
9x = 9
x = 1

According to algebra, it is.

To be seperate numbers there has to be a number between them.

As there is no number between 0.9999999.......... and 1.00000........
0.99999.......=1.00000.......

Hmmm. To keep you thinking, I might add that 0.9... is not EXACTLY equal to 1. It is more that 0.9... is a geometric sequence 9/10 + 9/100 + 9/1000 + ..., whose limit is 1.

So you'd be entirely correct that 0.9... CONVERGES to 1, but it is slightly more ambiguous whether or not 0.9... equals 1.

For all intents and purposes, though... yes, 0.9... equals 1.
