if we are asked to work out the integral of a curve say from -1 to 1, and in the domain [-1,0] the curve lies below the x axis, (that is, it has negative y values), then the integral in the domain [-1,1] is calculated as normal (single integral calculation from -1 to 1) or do we have to make the integral in [-1,0] negative.

its asking for the "integral from -1 to 1" it's not asking for the area. so i dont have to change the sign for the integral on [-1,0] right?

I think I know what you mean. If the question is "evaluate", then the negative aspect doesn't need to be accounted for, i.e. just integrate directly. Unless the question states specifically "find the area" then you have to make the negative area positive to find the answer
