im downloading about 300kb/s for adsl2 should be 1mb rite?

could my realli shit comp be affecting this because its a .8Ghz 32mb ram. i know its reali old i plan on geting a new one at the end of the year.

Advertised download and upload rates are theoretical limits. In reality its much lower. Theres lots of factors; the speed of your computer, the speed of the server you're downloading from, the route taken by packets going from the server to your computer, network load, whether theres any cows chewing on the cables, etc

Yes, your transfer rate can be affected by the slowness of your computer.

Most of the time when using adsl2, you're limited to the speed at which the server would serve. On some sites usually australian, I can get 2.2MB/s constant.

cheers thanx guys. my friends were like y dont u freeking get a new computer..... btw it takes approx 5-6 minutes to load everything so i can use the computer. afta i type my password to log in if i try open something itll take 8-10 minutes. :rofl: my comp is sooooooooooooooo shit

Dial-up modems are advertised with 56K meaning 56 Kilobits/second.
When in fact they achieve speeds around 4-6 Kilobytes/second.
I wished dialup could achieve 56 Kilobytes/second when I still had it, but that's ADSL speed.

One byte equals eight bits.

What's more appealing, 4K or 56K ?

does it cost more to get better broadband. mine averages about 30-40kb/s
