So how do you make them

if you use the qote button, there is a separate panel with some smilies in it or you can shorthand them if you use the quick quote button
eg (with no spaces)
: + ) =
: + ( =
: + p =

There are also the bbcode/html codings as well
eg : emotion here : (am not really familiar with these ones but they should work)..again, no spaces
