Outline the social conditions and religious practices of pre-Islamic Arabia
Social conditions and Quality of Life in the pre-Islamic Arabian period, was as described by the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w), a time of ignorance. This was because human rights were unjust and did not apply to all people. A major aspect of the pre-Islamic period was that the tribes followed a mindset and mentality of might is right, which caused injustice, slavery and hence a large gap between the rich and poor. The rich mostly made money via trade and business as the Kaaba in Mecca was well known among tourists and was an important aspect of the Arabic tribes as their many idols were stored inside the Islamic sacred place. This hence made the Kaaba a gathering place for trade since idol worshippers gathered there to worship their idols and merchants gathered there to create business. However, all of the fortune among the rich, has caused drunkenness, gambling and also caused them to commonly sin. Due to the fact that males dominantly performed trade and became rich, due to the might is right policy within the society, women were placed at the bottom of the hierarchy as they were seen as a curse and because of this, female infanticide was common among the community. This became a tradition and custom within the Arabian community. The poor however were heavily mistreated, denied education and were just able to fend for themselves. When salves started to convert to Islam, the rich did not hesitate to publicly torture and humiliate them. Religious practices in this time contained mainly idol worshipping as the Quraysh tribe was polytheistic. They had many gods to worship and kept the Kaaba to store many different types of idols to worship. Despite the constant warnings in the future that have been made by the prophet, they still remained polytheistic and refused to see the Prophet's blessing. This then became named by the prophet as the age of Ignorance. “When it is said to them: “follow what God has sent down,” they say: “No. We follow that wherein we found our forefathers.” (2:170). Hence due to the perplexed definition of human rights (might is right) and heavy idol worshipping and sin, the pre-Islamic Arabia was named the Age of Ignorance by the prophet Muhammad.
